Report: Patriots Release Wide Receiver Jeremy Ebert

David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

After drafting wide receivers Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce over the weekend, the New England Patriots have decided to part ways with second-year wide receiver Jeremy Ebert.

According to ESPN Boston, the New England Patriots have informed wide receiver Jeremy Ebert of his release.

This is the second time that the Patriots have released Ebert, who was cut at the conclusion of last years training camp. He had a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles before returning to New England in November, joining their practice squad.

Ebert, a seventh round pick in 2012, did not see any regular season action this past season. He did see action in the preseason, catching six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.

After all of the additions the Patriots have made at wide receiver, Ebert had to have seen this move coming. Over the weekend, New England drafted two wide receivers in Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce in addition to signing Michael Jenkins, Danny Amendola and Donald Jones in free agency. The team also re-signed Julian Edelman, who has a similar but more developed skillset of Ebert's.

Ebert, if he made the team, projected as depth at the Z-position, behind Amendola, Edelman and likely Boyce. Don't rule out Ebert re-joining the team in the future, but having been released this early, it's likely the last we will see of the Northwestern product.
