Yes, we looked every bit of the 9-7 team some in the media were expecting. Yes the rookie WRs struggled AGAIN. Yes the offense looked worse than 06 which many a homer thought was impossible. Yes there were guys running wide open downfield vs our defense AGAIN Yes we would probably be 0-2 if we weren't facing terrible teams, with rookie QBs. But we are 2-0, we are leading our division, we have 10 days till our next home game, and it's against a another sub-par opponent in the Bucs. So relax b/c we ain't got no worries until we head down to ATL.
Now no one is going to accuse me of being Mr. Homer Sunshine Patriots fan.
I've been critical of lots of things about this team, when ever I think it's warranted. I've been critical about the drafting, some roster decisions, and indvidual players, but pretty much all the time my criticism was warranted (in other words I call em like I see em) However some of the hysteria about the rookies needs to cool down. I was very critical of Thompkins performance vs the Bills. However that was b/c he didn't really show any good. The thing about rookies or at least good rookies is they will show you a lot of bad, but you hope they will show you some good too. And that's exactly what I saw vs the Jets from Dobson and Thompkins. They showed us a lot of bad, but they showed us a lot of good things as well. Dobson showed his speed, he showed his physical talent, he showed he can get behind a defense. He got open down field on a mutliple occasions. And he created seperation. And keep in mind how bad Thompkins was his 1st game. Speaking of Thompkins he improved significantly from last week. He showed he can get seperation off the line and get down field. He nearly had a TD catch. Most of their mistakes came from not being able to see the field, being out of the sync w/ the QB and not being able to consistently catching the football. THESE ARE COMMON FIXABLE ROOKIE MISTAKES. IT'S WEEK 2 PEOPLE. These are the REAL growing pains, we were talking about. Yes it's a lot uglier in person and not the 14-2, beat ever good team we face "growing pains" we had in 2010. Which is why I expect us going 11-5.
Overall I came out more encouraged than discouraged from what we saw in our rookies. Yes they NEED to start catching the football a lot more consistently, but again it's still very early in the season and we will see how they improve in that department as the year progresses. May I remind you of a WR who had similar problems catching the football. His name is Torrey Smith you might remember him making plays all over the place in the playoffs last year. Before he became that guy he was this guy. So let's just all calm down about the offense, take a deep breath and celebrate 2-0.
