We're all thinking it, aren't we: the New England Patriots need help at wide receiver. And while some part of me is still holding out hope that they will swing a trade for Larry Fitzgerald (the same part of me holding out hope that all of this hair starting to sprout up on my back will magically stop growing), in reality I don't think we'll be acquiring ourselves an elite WR from another team anytime soon.
So, that leaves New England with two options: forge ahead with what they have and hope that the rookies improve with each and every game, or go out and acquire some veteran help to assist the rookies in easing into what is one of the more complicated offenses in the NFL. After these last two weeks, Bill Belichick may decide to go with the latter option.
Below is a list of the current free agent wide receivers that are avaliable and ready to play. This list isn't comprehensive or up-to-the-minute, but most of the major names are on there. There are more than a few guys on this list - Lloyd, Stallworth, Branch, Gaffney, Underwood - that have a familiarity with the Patriots system, and there are also guys -Massaqoi, Breaston, Schilens, Doucet, Crayton - that have seen success in other systems. Granted, the list isn't incredibly impressive, but the fact of the matter is that if Belichick decides that he needs some veteran guys to catch the ball, he can find them.
