The Mallet Factor

Some people might be forgetting the guy that has been on the bench learning behind TB#12 for a couple of years. But it might be wise to remember him this offseason.

Ryan Mallett is a large, strong armed QB who has been able to sit behind Tom Brady for a couple of years and learn behind one of the best, as well as learning in BB's system. He has a gun for an arm, makes solid decisions, but also is not very athletic or mobile. When the Patriots picked him with the 74th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, they had him as the top QB on their own board. He is still only 25 years old and is touted as having a high football IQ, which has allowed him to learn underneath the tutelage of Brady.

Now this season the Pats have to take into consideration that Mallett might be the ultimate trade bait for a QB hungry team. The Houston Texans, who now have former Pats OC Bill O'Brien as their Head Coach, represents a team that might have interest in Mallett. This makes a whole ton of sense with the O'Brien connection as well as the fact that they have been rumored to be looking at Jadeveon Clowney, DE from South Carolina. (Scary as that is to see Clowney and J.J. Watt on the same line)

There are a couple more options that might be available as well as the Texans and the 1st pick of the 2nd round in the draft. Another team that makes a ton of sense is the Minnesota Vikings, who have the 8th pick in the 2nd round to throw around. They just signed Norv Turner to be their OC, a man who is takes to a vertical passing game like Rex Ryan apparently takes to feet. not to mention their new HC is a man who is well know for building defenses in Mike Zimmer. It makes sense that they could go defense in the 1st round and send their 2nd round pick to the Pats for Mallett. QB hungry teams want franchise QB's, but they do not all want to pay a huge price of an early 1st rounder and still have to take the time to develop them.

Enter Mallett.
