Patriots Mock Draft 2.0

Possible Patriots Mock Draft 2.0:

1(29) - Marqise Lee, WR, USC (Previously Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU)

My pick of a WR in the first round of my last mock received lots of criticism however the Patriots now reportedly want to trade up for a wide receiver in the first round. They have shown interest in Lee (6'0" 192) throughout the draft process. He is an explosive receiver and one of the best route runners in the class, having drawn comparisons to Victor Cruz. He could start from day 1 and also become the primary kickoff returner. I would really prefer Odell Beckham Jr. here but the Patriots would likely have to trade up a few spots to get him.

Other Options at WR - Odell Beckham Jr., LSU, and Brandin Cooks, Oregon State

2(62) - Dominique Easley, DE/DT, Florida (Same)

The Patriots have expressed a lot of interest in Easley (6'2" 288). He is the draft's most explosive interior pass rusher when healthy, and has a high motor. He could help the pass rush a lot. The only concern with him is two torn ACLs in college including one in 2013, however he will supposedly be ready for OTAs.

Other Options at DT - Will Sutton, Arizona State, and Stephon Tuitt, Notre Dame

3(93) - Telvin Smith, OLB/SS, FSU (Previously Deone Bucannon, SS, Washington State)

Telvin Smith (6'3" 218) is an explosive outside linebacker who is projected to be a third round pick, even though he has first round talent and priduction. This is because he is undersized to play linebacker in the NFL, and has no experience at safety. THe patriots need help at both positions, however, and Smith compares to Kam Chancellor. Bill Belichick would likely have no problem finding ways to use him creatively, and he could contribute immediatelyas a wapon for the defense, filling two needs at once.

Other Options at OLB - Christian Kirksey, Iowa, and Marcus Smith, Louisville

4(130) - CJ Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa (Same)

Fiedorowicz (6'5" 265) is the draft's best blocking tight end, and has the athleticism and potential to develop as a receiver. He will be able to contribute right away to the offense, and will be a solid insurance plan for Gronk. Once Gronk returns, he can complement him in two tight end sets. He also has the Iowa connection, having worked under Kirk and Brian Ferentz, who Belichick has worked with.

Other Options at TE - Arthur Lynch, Georgia, and Crockett Gilmore, Colorado (Late rounds)

4(140) - Andre Williams, RB, Boston College (Previously David Fales, QB, SJSU)

Williams (6'0" 230) is a power back who was very productive in college, rushing for over 2,000 yards in 2013. He would be a nice replacement for the departed LeGarrette Blount and could contribute as part of a rotation of backs as a rookie, along with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Brandon Bolden.

Other Options at RB - Jeremy Hill, LSU (Earlier rounds), and Carlos Hyde, Ohio State (Earlier rounds)

6(198) - Brandon Thomas, OG, Clemson (Previously Jordan Tripp, OLB, Montana)

Thomas (6'3" 317) is a guard who was projected as a second round pick and is now a late round prospect because of a torn ACL suffered in workouts earlier this month. He will probably spend most or all of his rookie year on injured reserve, and could become the Patriots' starter at right guard in year two, when Dan Connoly hits free agency. He would be a good value pick for the future, like Marcus Cannon was in 2011.

Other Options at OG - Zach Fulton, Tennessee, and Brandon Lindner, Miami

6(206) - David Fales, QB, SJSU (Previously Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon)

Fales (6'3" 220) is an accurate pocket passer who would be a good third QB with developmental potential in 2014 and could back up Tom Brady when Ryan Mallett becomes a free agent in 2015.

Other Options at QB - Jeff Matthews, Cornell, and Garrett Gilbert, SMU

7(244) - A.C. Leonard, TE, Tennessee State (Previously Alden Darby, FS, Arizona)

Leonard (6'2" 252) is an extremely athletic, "move" tight end in the mold of Aaron Hernandez. he is extremely fast for the position, running the 40 yard dash in 4.50 seconds, but had some off field issues. He would be a good value pick here with some potential.

Other at TE - Gator Hoskins, Marshall, and Colt Lyerla, Oregon (If he is not off their board)
