I'm curious about a guy like Bill Belichick and how he views his football team. How he sees football life is all that matters in some cases. I'm sure he takes advice from other men of football whom he trusts. But I am still curious as to how he views the game.
When he looks at his team, he doesn't approach them the way ESPN or the NFL Network thinks of them. Hence some of his drafts and free agent signings. Dominique Easley will be a highly scrutinized pick for some time. As well as Jimmy Garoppolo. But all Bill can do is just build the best team he believes in.
The sad part for me is when I hear fans saying that he needs to be relieved of his GM duties. Or when I hear complaints about how this isn't the pick the fans wanted. Sometimes I wonder is the Patriots fan base the most spoiled fan base I've ever seen. Because Bill the GM has done a tremendous job.
He has not picked popular players per se. But he has gone out and attempted to get solid football men. In the booth, behind the scenes, and on the field, Bill has made strides to get people on the team that can help take that next step towards a title.
Dominique Easley could help. Getting sacks between the tackles is very tough in the NFL. J.J. Watt has done wonders because of the creativity of former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Having a defensive tackle who can pressure the pocket from his position will alter a lot of game plans.
I'm not saying that Mr. Easley will succeed right off the bat. But what I'm saying is let's have a little faith here. There are many football players who turn out to be great players because someone believed in them. And since Dominique won't have to start, that's less pressure on him to perform.
The Patriots need game changers on both sides of the ball. They need guys who can tip the game in their favor again. Ty Law, Willie Mac, Rodney Harrison, and Mike Vrabel are not playing for this team any more. So now the burden of proof falls upon Devin McCourty, Jamie Collins, Duron Harmon, Logan Ryan, Jerod Mayo, and Dont'a Hightower. These are the younger players who need to take the team to the next level. Maybe none more than Devin McCourty. Whom I believe has to be a top player this coming season.
I'm curious to see what kind of team this 2014 edition will be. I believe they will be special. But the burden of proof falls upon them to prove it.
