I have been watching the NBA Finals and soaking in some thoughts. San Antonio has really played well as a team. T-e-a-m as in a unity. It has been great offensive basketball. It made me wonder has Bill been watching the Finals. I know Bill has been preaching the team concept for a long time now. But I just cannot but help and wonder is what San Antonio doing striking a chord inside him.
Bill Belichick seems to be on the forefront of the kinds of things that can help improve his team. The wheels always seem to be in motion for how can this get better. The Patriots have been missing parts or opportunities in some way, shape, or form for a little while now. But it just feels like they are getting closer to taking that next step. That final step towards the Lombardi.
A lot of fans are under the impression that they need a deep threat. And they may be right. But what if, in part, what NE is missing is hungry ball players who do their job? Talent can account for a lot. But desire makes up the rest of that right? When I see Kwahi Leonard take the ball away from Lebron James. Or see Lebron stop hustling when Kwahi drives past him to the hoop, you can see where the desire is.
David Givens was a 7th round pick out of Notre Dame. He tied John Stallworth's record for touchdown passes caught in consecutive playoff games with 11 straight. Not even Jerry Rice did that. But he was big when the Patriots needed someone to step up. As was Antoine Smith, Troy Brown, and Mike Vrabel.
With the current times, sports figures get glorified by the media. There is a lot made of what they have done, or what they have not done in their respective sports. And it often becomes about how that one did or did not impact the game. Instead of how his t-e-a-m played. The way the Spurs have played, the way Seattle played last season, has reminded me that when championship time rolls around its about the team. Its great to have a sure fire Hall Of Fame quarterback. But what about everyone else?
Can your back ups give you something when you need them? Over a long season you are going to need other players to show up. Not just due to injuries to other players, but because you have these guys because you believe they can help you at some point and time.
I'm sure there are many questions that will come alive during the season. I have questions about the middle linebacker position if Dont'a Hightower winds up there again. But the big key is how New England plays together. I look forward to seeing the answer.
