Post First Round Thoughts

I maybe the only one who feels this way, but I felt that a lot of developmental players went in the draft last night. MORE than I would have thought in the first round. Teams have to work out how these guys will fit into their systems. But at this point that is on them.

Every year, I hear the same old story about how Dallas is FINALLY going to please the Rock's fans and win the Super Bowl. And how they are the most talented team in the NFL. And every time I hear it, I want to smack the guy saying it. I'm not saying they can't do it. But I will say that the Cowboys are NOT the NFL's most talented team. Or close to it. But the prognosticators LOVE speaking so highly of the Cowboys. And the chances they have to win it all. Then cradle them when they lose far from the playoffs.

If anything, Ezekiel Elliot should aid the efforts of the team. But he cannot cover for all of the short comings of the Cowboys. I don't even think that Elliot is the best back in the draft. Is he the most ready to play? Maybe. But the whole point of this draft is find players who can complement your team. And should you find a player that becomes a Hall Of Fame guy. It just means you did your homework. I have major questions about Dallas' defense, their depth, and the lack of offensive speed.

The Cincinnati Bengals are another team with a lot of talent who haven't gotten over the hump. I question taking a guy whom I thought the best corner in this draft in William Jackson III. When they could have used another player somewhere else. Did they do it because he was the best player on their board? Or did they do it to despite the Steelers? Who picked Burns right behind them. A project by what the ESPN guys were saying.

I heard a lot of positive things about Jalen Ramsey before the draft. But during the draft I heard that he only had 3 career ints. Doesn't sound like a guy I would draft with the no. 5 selection. But again, the team drafting has a plan for that particular player.

Of all the picks in the first round, Miami made the most head scratching one to me for right now, with Laremy Tunsil. Forget the social media stuff for a moment. I'm not sure you draft a guy who has had the injuries that he has had in the first round. Again, its not set in stone that he will not pan out. I just question the move when you are trying to build a sound base around your quarterback.

Jaylon Smith, Reggie Ragland, and Myles Jack are all linebackers who all have major health questions. How far will they fall?

The pick I like the most after reflection is Arizona's pick of Robert Nkemdiche. I think that he could have a good season if he picks up his game.

I do think that day 2 should hold good things for NE. Tyler Boyd of Pittsburgh, Jordan Jenkins of Georgia, Chris Moore of Cincinnati, Derrick Henry of Alabama, Darius Jackson of Eastern Michigan, C.J. Prosise of Notre Dame, and maybe Jordan Spriggs of Indiana are guys I think could go for NE today. Not sure how that will work out. But your guess is as good as mine.

Bill has never used his first pick on a WR before. He went RB once with Lawrence Maroney. And OT twice. Guard once. TE once. Defense has been what he usually drafts with his first selection.
