Open Thread: All NFL Games, Week 10

Hope you're all settled in. Your New England Patriots are off, so sit back, relax and enjoy today's games.

I might watch more of Minnesota and Green Bay, because I don't think I can listen to Jim Nantz and Phil Simms call Cleveland at Pittsburgh, though that's clearly the game I'd rather watch.

I didn't see that false start
I switched from the Packers-Vikings game just in time to see Cleveland score a touchdown to make it 13-3. But the play was called back on a false start on Braylon Edwards. The replay didn't show anything.

Now there's a weak makeup unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Pittsburgh.

So, you see? It's not just terrible officiating in Patriots games. It's just that in Patriots-Colts games, 98 percent of the bad calls go against New England.

regarding the announcers
this is one of the times that it would be worth subscribing to the streaming radio broadcasts. (except for the damn repetitive commercials.)

I'm listening to the dolphin's broadcast now, and it's pretty funny.  there's a certain freedom that you have when you are the public voice of a losing team.  (god knows I remember when that was the case for us...)

by circusboy on Nov 11, 2007 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

That's home field
advantage for ya.  But right now Cleveland is winning 14-3 anyways.  I really hope they win as I'd like to see some new teams really start to do well (excepting of course the status quo of New England being the hammer of the gods... I don't want that to change).

What about the Bills/Dolphins?
Only Green Bay/Minnesota is on here, but from the stats, the Bills don't look good today. If they lose today, the Pats will clinch the division by beating them next week.

by RSNexile on Nov 11, 2007 1:54 PM EST reply actions

I'm sure the braintrust at CBS
determined that no one wanted to see Dolphins-Bills. Too bad there's no online poll for that.

I'd rather see the intra-division game against two teams in my team's division, especially since we are schedule to play them both again. It's good to see Pittsburgh, since New England plays them in a few weeks, but they were just on Monday.

I'm a bit torn, part of me hates to see an "un-victoried" team, but on general principle I can't bring myself to root for the 'phins...

VERY interesting replay in Cleveland-Pittsburgh
There was just a video review of what was initially ruled an incomplete pass where Braylon Edwards made a nice catch in the right side of the end zone. The call was overturned, as Edwards did get both feet in bounds.

BUT .. it looked like Edwards may have dragged his right toe out of bounds before he got his left foot down.

Hmmm .. Interesting call. No mention by Nantz or Simms, which is no surprise. We'll see if anyone else catches it.

Also, you can hear LOTS of cursing from these field-level microphones. I guess the league just doesn't care about it anymore.

Browns
The Browns are the real deal.  What a nice catch Edwards made and a good job by the officials to overturn their initial decision upon review.  The cursing is hilarious, by the way.  I guess not everyone is up to the pulpit's standard of verbal sanitation.

Also, I hate the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since I no longer consider there to be a threat to home-field advantage for the Pats (whom I truly believe are going 16-0), I'm rooting for Indy in tonight's game.  The Colts are a great team and the referees are not their fault.  Manning may be a commercial prostitute, but he's an outstanding quarterback and a class act and he pretty much never has anything negative to say.  I think he's a class act, so to speak.  The same can not be said of the (tongue in cheek here)'Most talented team in the NFL'.  Merriman and LT talk more smack than Mohammed Ali and back it up a heckuva lot less.  In other words, I hate San Diego.  I never thought I would find myself saying this, but go Colts.

bend but don't break?
the browns really seem to have that down,  judging by the drive diagrams on the drives, they've managed to let the steelers run long drives against them only to stop them near the goal line each time.

There is no way I will root
for the Colts. I would like to see them lose and finish with the 3rd best AFC record and not receive a first round bye.

Fine
Not by the NFL, by the FCC.  I thought that whenever there is "blue" language broadcast (inadvertently or not) over the airwaves, the FCC fines the company that is responsible (would that be NBC, NFL, or both in this case)?

Are live sports events exempted from this rule?

http://www.fcc.gov/eb/oip/

Specifically the part that says, "What makes material "profane?" "Profane language" includes those words that are so highly offensive that their mere utterance in the context presented may, in legal terms, amount to a "nuisance." In its Golden Globe Awards Order the FCC warned broadcasters that, depending on the context, it would consider the "F-Word" and those words (or variants thereof) that are as highly offensive as the "F-Word" to be "profane language" that cannot be broadcast between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. "

by Picky on Nov 12, 2007 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

I agree
I thought you meant the league should fine the player(s). I don't believe the person uttering the profanity is fined directly. As far as I know, it's the broadcaster, which would be the network.

It's generally the network who places the parabolic microphones on the sidelines. I would think that the network would be responsible any way you slice it.

Also, when I said the league doesn't care, I also meant that the league apparently doesn't care about the image it's been so visibly been trying to attempt. I would think that the league, if it's truly interested in un-tarnishing that image would be more concerned about audible cursing during broadcasts.

Lastly, I don't think live sporting events are exempt. Remember the "wardrobe malfunction"?

it kind of depends on the circumstances...
if a person is being filmed, and they swear, that's incidental.  ever since bush was caught swearing on an open mic, the rules got a mite greyer.

by circusboy on Nov 12, 2007 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think that has anything to do with it
These aren't remotely similar situations.

President Bush's slip was caught (I think) by a microphone that was inadvertently left on, and was not (again, I think) during a live broadcast.

The networks purposely put those microphones on the sidelines, and they know the kind of language players, coaches and fans use. And the players know they're being taped.

After the "wardrobe incident"...
...at the Super Bowl, the networks are supposed to using a several second delay anyway, so it's their fault if any obscenities are audible on the broadcast, even if it's live.

it's tough
Back when New England was 1-15 (and I was 4 or 5), I enjoyed watching Marino play so I've got a bit of a soft spot for the 'Phins, but after Shaka Zulu's, errr, Shula's comments, I'm going to have to root for Buffalo.  I'm going for them also because I've been to games in Buffalo and they have GREAT fans.  They're nuts about their team but not in the psychotic, will shoot you, Philadelphia sort of way.  They're good natured and friendly.  Go Bills.

Is anyone
else hoping that San Francisco loses out and finished dead last?  I have nothing against the '49ers, but I would really appreciate it if they managed to finish last in the league because while the league was gracious enough to steal our first round pick (which will be 32nd overall, most likely) we happen to have swiped San Fran's first round pick which is looking to be in the top 5.  Die San Francisco, die.

by PaulRevere on Nov 11, 2007 3:15 PM EST reply actions

I think that's fair to say
Well, except the "die SF, die" thing.

Obviously, the worse the Niners do, the better draft pick the Patriots get; so, yeah, I'd be OK with them finishing 2-14.

It's going to be tough for them to finish last, but with Miami leading Buffalo and St. Louis leading New Orleans, it's looking more possible.

I'm watching it
If Favre were Brady, then yes, it would be "running up the score."

But since he's not, reality can rule: it's more a matter of Minnesota never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity than anything else. And Peterson is hurt, too.

Stop Peterson, crush the Vikings.  That team should think about changing its name and its color.  Somehow I cannot see a 6'8" tall, 350 lb. Scandinavian who can pull a Boeing 747 100 yards in under a minute wearing purple and yellow.  Also, until they are not that terrible, they're not fearsome enough to be named after a group of individuals whose very mention inspired panic from the New World to Baghdad.  Seriously, a Viking carved his name into the royal palace in Baghdad.

Cleveland misses 52-yard FG to lose
On the final kneeldown, a Browns player charged the line, and there was a lot of pushing on the field as time expired. I wonder if anyone is going to make a big deal about that, or if anyone is going to get fined, like Mike Vrabel did.

Probably not. This stuff happens every week. It's pro football, for crying out loud. Well, except when the Patriots do it, when it's a systematic pattern of bad behavior.

what are everyone's picks in the Dallas/NY game?
my internal/eternal dislike of the Cowboys forces me to root for the Giants.

(for the record, my pathological dislike of the cowboys has (at least partially) to do with growing up a fan of the "Patriots" and not understanding how some other team got the title of "America's team"  grrrr...)

I used to hate the Cowboys but their team has a new face now.  Romo is hilarious and fun because of his enthusiasm.  That being said, I think the Giants may just win anyways and I'm impartial as to the outcome.  The NFC is pretty much inconsequential because regardless of who comes out, the AFC (pronounced New England [yes, I knock on wood as I type])is going to win the Super bowl.

Philip Rivers is a terrible QB
The Chargers would have put this game away already if Rivers weren't doing a great Rex Grossman impression. It's 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter, Peyton has four interceptions, and the Chargers are only up 16-0. One of their scores was a punt returned for a TD.

by 6thround on Nov 11, 2007 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Their first 2 TDs were on returns
Chargers returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then a Colts punt. San Diego had only 3 points on Manning's first three INTs. They just scored an offensive TD off the 4th.

Do you think Chargers fans are (as I asked in my weekly picks) wishing they had Marty Schotttenheimer and Drew Brees back?

Missed that one
I should have assumed that the first score was off a return too. Wow, Rivers really looks terrible. He just fumbled the ball in the end zone, and Indy would have tied it up if they had been able to make the 2-point conversion.
It is raining there, and the apologists will use that as their excuse. I had high hopes for this game, and while the defenses have made some great plays, this has been mostly a comedy of errors so far.

Yeah, Madden said, "There's no better person to have in this situation than Peyton Manning."

The situation being referred to was the one where your team is down by a wide margin and you need to mount some offense.  Sorry John, but I can think of someone better to have in that situation.  You've been making excuses all night about poor Manning not having his receivers.  Sorry Madden, but shut up.  Manning has to get it done.  Brady got it done without Marvin Harrison or anyone even as good as the Colts' 4th receiver.  Could it be that we are truly seeing the first irrefutable [even by a Colts fan with his head in his sphincter] evidence that Brady is better than Manning?

I think
that Indy has a Patriots hangover.  I think San Diego had one too after we pummeled them.  I really do think that the Patriots beat a team up physically and psychologically to the point where they have a hard time recovering.  This is especially bad for the Colts who are universally undersized.
