Super Bowl XLVI Game Thread

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

Sunday, February 5th, 2012 | 6:29 PM ET | TV: NBC

Giants Coverage: Big Blue View

60 minutes. That's all that stands between the New England Patriots and a fourth Super Bowl title since the 2001 NFL season.

Tonight, the New England Patriots will take on the New York Giants here at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. Kick-off is at 6:29 PM ET, but you will all have the television on long before them.

My prediction for tonight's game? A Patriots win, of course. While any Patriots fan would love a blowout, considering the match-up, that's unlikely to happen. I expect a closely contested game, with the Patriots fending off a late comeback attempt by the Giants. In the year of the quarterback, it would only be fitting that the Patriots much criticized defense makes the critical stop. Well, that's my prediction at least. I think Tom Brady will come out and have his best career Super Bowl performance - he has more than just his legacy on the line. And of course, LETS GO PATS! Greg's Prediction: Patriots 31 Giants 27

AFC Championship Game Thread

New England Patriots (#1) vs. Baltimore Ravens (#2)

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 | 3:00 PM ET | TV: CBS

Ravens Coverage: Baltimore Beatdown

We're here. After a long, turbulent offseason, an up and down beginning to the year, and a dominant stretch over the past ten weeks, the Patriots are taking on the Baltimore Ravens in the 2011-12 AFC Championship.

Today, the Patriots are faced with the task of defeating their toughest opponent of the 2011 season: The Baltimore Ravens.

A win, and the Patriots will be taking on either the Giants or 49ers in Super Bowl XLVI in their fifth Super Bowl of the Tom Brady / Bill Belichick era. A loss, and the Patriots will once again have to face the critics that have haunted them since Spygate and the team's Super Bowl XLII loss.

We'll do the analysis later. For now, lets enjoy some football.

Go Pats!

AFC Divisional Playoffs Game Thread

New England Patriots (#1) vs. Denver Broncos (#4)

Saturday, January 14th, 2012 | 8:00 PM ET | TV: CBS

Broncos Coverage: Mile High Report

It seems unreal that the playoffs are already here. It seems like yesterday that we were talking about courts in Minnesota, old men in suits, and the NFL lockout. Now, for the second straight year, the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC runs through New England. Tonight, the Patriots will look to avoid their fourth straight postseason loss, as they host the Denver Broncos.

This week, we've taken a look at every angle. We've talked Tebow, Tebow, Tebow, and Tebow. Now, as the Patriots prepare get ready to take the field for their most important game since Super Bowl XLII, I leave you with a few words that my dad forwarded to me in an email earlier today:

God is eating dinner alone. Aaron Rodgers approaches the table and God asks "What do you believe?" Rodgers says, "I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends." God can't help but see the goodness of Rodgers and offers him a seat to his left.

Tim Tebow walks up and God says, "What do you believe?" Tebow says, "I believe in your total goodness, love and generosity and that you have given all to mankind." God is greatly moved by Tebow's eloquence, and offers him a seat to his right.

Finally, Tom Brady comes over to the table: "And you, Tom, what do you believe?" Tom replies, "I believe you're in my seat."

Tom Brady is a man on a mission, and he knows the opportunity that stands before him. I believe the Broncos will put up a good fight tonight, but I think Brady wills the Patriots to a win. Greg's Prediction: Patriots 31 Broncos 20

First half thoughts:
  • Considering the way the Patriots were abused defensively in the first quarter, to rally off 20 straight second quarter points is certainly impressive.
  • The word "abused" probably isn't a harsh enough word to describe the Patriots first quarter defense. The Broncos ran for 169 total yards. The Patriots were supposed to be able to stop the run up the middle, but simply couldn't stop anything. The Broncos didn't throw too many tricks at the Patriots (aside from one reverse pass that failed), but were able to out-physical the Patriots at the line.
  • The key first half injury to watch: defensive end Andre Carter. He injured his left knee in the second quarter, and it didn't look pretty. With Carter out, the Patriots switched to a 3-4 front and actually saw some success, limiting Broncos runs and forced two fumbles, recovering the ball both times and scoring 10 points.
  • Offensively, the Patriots have had a good mix and match of personnel formations. They've spread the Broncos out, gone to a three tight end power set, etc. Chad Ochocinco has played a lot of snaps as the #2 receiver and caught a 33 yard touchdown on the Patriots opening drive.
  • Tom Brady has played excellent football thus far. He's only 12/21, but aside from two errant throws, has looked very accurate. He also has 171 yards and two touchdowns.
  • 83 of Brady's passing yards have gone to Aaron Hernandez. The Broncos have been consistently double-teaming Rob Gronkowski, and Hernandez has been abusing man coverage. Hernandez has six catches and a touchdown.
  • This game has been a mixed bag for the Patriots thus far, and their run defense was painful to watch in the first quarter. Nonetheless, the team has managed to capitalize on Denver mistakes and they are throwing the football well.

New England Patriots (8-3) vs. Indianapolis Colts (0-11)

Sunday, December 4th, 2011 | 1:00 PM ET

TV: CBS | Radio: 98.5 The Sports Hub

Colts Coverage: Stampede Blue

When most NFL fans looked at their 2011 schedules in April, they likely circled today's game against the Indianapolis Colts as one of the best games of the year. Unfortunately, the Patriots and Colts have gone in opposite directions this year, with the Patriots once again being atop the AFC East and the Colts being 0-11 at the bottom of the barrel in the NFL (already eliminated from playoff contention) due to a (likely) season ending neck injury to Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Of course, the Colts have some players from the rivalry of years past, such as defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis that will make the contest intriguing. However, the Colts defense, as a whole, has been atrocious and their offense, which will be led by quarterback Dan Orlovsky has been even worse.

In addition, the Colts' defensive scheme, the Tampa 2, is exactly the type of defense that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady picks apart the best. I'm expecting a complete and total victory from the Patriots today, but lets not forget, there's a reason they play these games. This is the NFL, and this is a Colts team that nearly beat the Steelers earlier in the year, a Steelers squad that beat down on the Patriots just a month ago.

In addition, while the media and fans can consider this game a mismatch, we all know not a single player on the Patriots roster will have that on their minds.

Greg's Prediction: Patriots 38 Colts 10
