Open Thread: New England Patriots @ Indianapolis Colts, Week 9

No players with the flu. No bug-eyed Reche Caldwell. No second-rate linebackers covering a slot tight end.

The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss reported last night that safety Eugene Wilson and the aforementioned Eric Alexander have been downgraded to out. Wilson will be missed, and James Sanders will likely start in his place. That means Rodney Harrison will probably start as well, and that leaves New England a little thin at safety, with Brandon Meriweather first off the bench.

New England Patriots @ Indianapolis Colts
RCA Dome, Nov. 4, 4:15 p.m.

Tight end Ben Watson, who has missed two games, is expected to play, but probably is not 100 percent. Meanwhile, we all way to hear if Indy wide receiver Marvin Harrison will play.

Official lists of inactives for today's late games have yet to be released.

There's still some time for talk, so any last-minute pregame thoughts (you know, something intelligent) should go here.

Expect an influx of Colts fans. Be nice to them. I'll take care of any "issues."

Enjoy the game, and Go PATRIOTS!!

At least...
...I think they'll get that horrible call overturned.... then again, it shouldn't have to be overturned, and they lose a challenge.

These officials are incompetent!
What a terrible call! And now the Patriots have to waste a challenge! And the lousy officials missed an obvious holding at the line. This is ridiculous!

Remember...
We're evil and the Colts are the new golden boys. They need to like, lock all the Refs in a hotel during the season and not let them see the media stuff or something (mostly kidding...)

by DanieXJ on Nov 4, 2007 4:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's just terrible
Two officials were looking right at it, and they both got it wrong. And the Patriots had to burn a challenge less than 2.5 minutes into the game.

But Clark had him wrapped up and tackled him. There was also a pick play (didn't catch the number) in the middle of the field at the goal line.

Patriots 0, Colts 3, 1st Q, 3:05
Patriots are fortunate to be trailing by just 3. I can't believe they have a rookie referee calling such an important game, and they're doing everything possible to reinforce my concerns.

In other news, Jim Nantz sounds so disappointed that it's only 3-0.

End of 1st Quarter
Patriots 0, Colts 3

Offense getting it going after starting with a 3-and-out. Defense gave up a lot of yards, but only 3 points while possibly getting credit for blocking Vinatieri's first career missed FG in the RCA dome.

hey tommasse (slightly OT)
I don't suppose you have the ear of anyone in the NFL.  if so, can you extend my complaint about the ads on the webcast?  the NFL has only 3 ads, using the same voice, that they run in sequence, over and over and over and over... everytime there is any sort of lull in the action...  (sometimes when there isn't!)

It's driving me CRAZY!  if I hadn't already paid for the bloody fieldpass radio this season, I now wouldn't, and wouldn't recommend it.

no, that at least would be some variety...
and regrettably they already got mine...
they're for:
-nfl gameday,
-nfl replay, "enhancement"
-nfl network, colts-falcons
on a loop.
same "voice of god" type voice, grumbling along.  the football trumpet fanfares, and machismo jokes...

given my tendency to get really tense during these games, this really isn't helping...  could be worse, they forgot to turn them off a couple of weeks ago, and the whole second quarter was buried by these ads. whoever is on the switch now is a little faster, but still late a lot.

Patriots defense is AWESOME!
What a great couple of goal-line stands. That was a fantastic third-down stop. Even the safety valve was covered.

Colts have scored only by the grace of the absolutely incompetent officiating. It should be 7-0 at worst. The NFL should be utterly embarrassed by this display.

by tommasse on Nov 4, 2007 5:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's simple
What I want is a fairly called game. That doesn't mean that the Pats get calls for them, I just want the calls to be equally called on either side. Which this game, hasn't been. And, like it happened with the BC game (horrible non-call for pass interference at the end, not to mention on the same play roughing the QB) the 'bad guy' will be taken off his high horse thanks to the robin hood refs. It's sad... they need to fire all of them, hire new ones, and retrain them...

by DanieXJ on Nov 4, 2007 5:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The amazing thing
Is that they call the Colts the 'good guys.' I don't get it. It's like a bad WWE match where the ref doesn't see the guy get hit with a chair. It would be funny if it weren't true.

I'm done for today. No more game tonight, maybe after I cool down after the Bye Week. I'll work on my NaNo, have a good meal, but I'm sick of Nantz, Simms, and the obviously crooked (or maybe he's just an idiot) ref.

My prediction. The Colts will go 16-0, we'll go 15-1, we'll be back here in the playoffs, and they'll get all the calls again and win another Super Bowl, that is my prediction...

Giants fan here
so I'm (mostly) impartial...these refs are BRUTAL. Could they be trying any harder to give this game to the Colts? All I wanted was to watch a well-played game between 2 great teams, not a clinic in "referee throwing a game 101." Ridiculous...Sorry Pats fans, but I don't think the NFL is gonna let you guys pull this thing out.

Moss
Won't let them lose this game.

by 6thround on Nov 4, 2007 6:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hey, they call it after the pass is completed
These officials are embarrassing. They wait until the Patriots have a big play, and they call the defensive pass interference when they know it will be declined.

Meanwhile, Moss, who made another spectacular play, was speared, but (not surprisingly) there's no call.

I have no clue how that's offensive interference
on Moss. The Colts are far bigger cheaters than the Patriots have ever been accused of being.

Even SIMMS said it was a bogus call.

Moss won't let them lose
But the refs are doing their best to take it out of his hands.

The NFL should be ashamed...
...of the way this game is being officiated. This is a possibly the most embarrassing display of favoritism in the league's long march to shove the Colts down America's throat and pimp Manning as America's QB.

Welker TD
That was a perfect pass from Brady, on a difficult throw, when the Pats needed it most.

Patriots 17, Colts 20, 4th Q, 7:59
7 plays, 73 yards, 1:43

Despite the officials' best efforts to fix the game, the Patriots hang tough and have this one going down to the wire.

I'M SHOCKED!
The Colts have been holding all day, and they finally call it. Only because it was SOOOOO obvious.

But I'm sure Polian and Dungy will be complaining about it, and the official will be reprimanded.

This stupid
But my hands are shaking. The anticipation, the build-up, the refs, Brady coming from behind, and everything else is just too much. Not the prettiest game, but what a win!

I can't wait for the highlight reel... there are times that it sucks not to have a tv, but this sounds like a game where I probably would have put a brick through it...

I'm just waiting...
...for some idiot to come in here and say the refs were obviously biased against the Colts, and how the Colts would have won had they not had to play without a handful of their starters.

I mean, why not? That was the most blatantly farcical example of poor officiating I've ever seen last for an entire game, so why not add stupidity to blindness?

where does one find...
the game book?  or is this a perk of being a journalist? ;-)

general question, I've been following the nfl.com play-by-play, is there a better option for the tv-challenged?

by circusboy on Nov 5, 2007 12:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not a perk. Gamebook available only after the game
The gamebook is posted on NFL.com. Go to the main GameCenter page for any game played. Right under the quarter-by-quarter scoreboard is the Week # and date of the game. Shortly after the conclusion of the game, there will be a link for GAMEBOOK, which is linked to a PDF.

Most of the info in gamebook are on the other GameCenter pages, but I find the gamebook easier to reference and text-search and it doesn't chew up system memory like some browser pages do.

good to know...
yes the other pages will eat resources... since nfl.com went so flash heavy,  every time you instantiate the flash player you use up some 80MB of memory, and I think they use like 3 on a gamecenter page...
