Sports Blogs Nation Mock Draft

First Round, Pick No. 24
Eric Weddle, S, Utah

Sports Blogs Nation (SBNation.com) of which Pats Pulpit is a member blog, is in the midst of a mock draft (hosted by our good friends at SBN's Seattle Seahawks blog). Recently, I made the No. 24 selection of the first round for the New England Patriots.

My pick has not been well received.

You can see who the rest of the bloggers selected by following this link to the Field Gulls main page. Or you can click here to navigate directly to my pick.

I'll take out a bit of the mystery: I chose Eric Weddle, a safety from the University of Utah. Here are a few profile links:

NFL.com's profile is provided by NFL Draft Scout (used by many major sources. They have their own Weddle page here).
CNN / Sports Ilustrated's page also has a link for a quick video summary package (under Weddle's photo).
ESPN.com's page requires an Insider account to view this profile.

Please talk amongst yourselves. I'll be making the No. 28 pick shortly, so I'll refrain from additional comment until then.

Pretty good pick.
I think he would be available at pick #28. Having said that I don't know who I would choose instead (players I would like have already been chosen in this mock draft but may not be in the actual draft).

A good "need" pick
I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out who Pioli/Bellichick might pick. They play so many games (inviting some players for official visits, talking up players from schools with whom they have relationships, etc.) that there is no clue as to what their motives are. They also tend to vary somewhat from the collective scouting rankings. They get beaten up for taking some players higher than their perceived value, but the fact is that they have hit on almost all of their first round picks, and have found several gems in the mid-to-late rounds. Even if they've paid an opportunity cost in picking some players higher than their projected slots, the high success rate trumps those concerns. I like the pick, with the only caveat being that I don't yet know who else was available. He's versatile, athletic and seems to have good football sense. Sounds exactly like the kind of guy that could excel with the Patriots.
