Patriots trade 4th-round pick for Randy Moss

Patriots to trade for WR Moss
Moss in New England for physical

In a long-anticipated deal, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the New England Patriots will trade a 4th-round pick (No. 127 Update [2007-4-29 11:43:30 by tommasse]: Actually, it is the No. 110 pick) in today's draft to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Randy Moss.

Moss is reportedly in New England for a physical and is expected to restructure his highly skewed contract before the deal becomes official. (I'm sure the NFLPA will want to look at that before signing off, too.). The deal is expected to be complete today.

Moss has been in trouble with the law and with his teammates in the past. He has admitted several times to "not trying" on every play.

The price of a 4th-round pick is low, but how high the price?

Update [2007-4-29 11:13:56 by tommasse]:
Moss's troubled past is well documented (you can start with Wikipedia's Randy Moss page. There's also a concise, boxed chronicle from USA Today, but it's a tad outdated (published Sept. 25, 2002).

Update [2007-4-29 11:38:16 by tommasse]:
According to ESPN's Mortensen, the trade is now official.

Update [2007-4-29 14:36:9 by tommasse]:
The Patriots have posted this press release on their official site.

We'll have more later ... Vote in the poll.

What do you think of New England trading a 4th-round pick for Randy Moss?
Outstanding! He's just the player we need, and for almost nothing!

Excellent. A solid addition for a low price.

Good. He's at least a backup, and worth a 4th-rounder.

Average. It's a wash, depending who they draft, even if Moss stays clean.

Fair. Too high a price for too troubled a player.

Poor. What's going on in Foxboro? Anarchy reigns. The apocalypse is upon us!

I don't like this move at all.
For all the talk about character this offseason, the Pats are making some quetionable choices. Moss has about the lowest character of any player in the NFL. I doubt many people would invite this lowlife into their house. His stats have been declining and last year was his worst yet. Stallworth is probably upset by this move as it will limit his chance for a better contract next year and I don't see them getting along at all. Hopefully it works out for the Patriots on and off the field.

TBD
Is it possible to get a bargain on a lemon? A 4th round pick for a WR of Moss's ability should be considered a steal, but his character issues make me wonder if he's worth it. I'd like to see what the contract re-structuring looks like (both in terms of length and if there are any "character" clauses,) before deciding if I like this deal or not.

To a lesser extent...
...I thought the same thing when Corey Dillon came in. If Moss is serious about wanting to be part of a winner, though, it could work out.

I think the difference
between Dillon and Moss is the question of Moss taking plays off and not giving full effort.  Corey Dillon certainly brought baggage with him but it was off the field baggage, Moss brings on-field and off-field issues.  I hope he implodes your team, ;), but I think it is worth the risk for a 4th round pick.  I think you guys have enough leaders on that team to keep him under control.

If he's serious about wanting to win...
...a title and he's willing to behave, he and Brady will give Manning-Harrison a challenge for the single most dangerous passer-receiver combination in the league this year.

Those are
two big "if's" given his track record but I will say that Moss has God given gifts that most receivers do not possess.  Also, as Patriot fans, are you guys as thrilled with getting Welker as everyone is making it sound?  This is not a smart ass comment.  He seems like a solid football player but everyone was making him out to be a difference maker and I dont see it.  Just wondering what your thoughts are.  Oh, and I will put our QB and receiving corps against yours any day of the week and twice on sunday ;)
