Leader, receiver Troy Brown returns to Patriots for 15th season

'Mr. Patriot' Returns
Boston Herald: Brown Signs 1-Year Deal

An anonymous source tipped off the Boston Herald that the Patriots all-time leading receiver Troy Brown will return to the receiving corps for at least one more year.

The 36-year-old receiver has been a part of the Patriots since being drafted in 1993. While his overall production has dropped off with age, Brown still proves to be an important cog in the Patriots machine.

The overload of receivers on the Patriots roster should not concern Brown. In the past 3 seasons, the Patriots receiver has seen time not just at receiver, but in the punt return unit and even on defense. In addition to his contributions on the field, Troy has been a strong team leader for many years.

In 2004, when the Patriots lost both of its starting corners to injuries for the season, Troy Brown was asked to play some defensive back. Stepping in as primarily a nickel or dime corner, Brown managed to haul in three interceptions that year. While he voiced his dissatisfaction with being pulled in so many directions, he continued to contribute in all aspects of the game.

The 2007 season marks Brown's 15th in the NFL. Over the course of those years, he has managed to become the Patriots all-time leading receiver with over 550 receptions and 6,300 yards. Last season, Brown caught 43 balls for 384 yards and four touchdowns. His receiving numbers have certainly declined, but Brown has always been able to make the catch when it counts.

Where the receiver fits into the plans this season has yet to be determined. With Randy Moss, Donte' Stallworth and Wes Welker joining the receiving crew, the role available to Brown seems to still be a mystery. Either way, No. 80 will be back on the field in 2007 for yet another season.

Only Steve Grogan, who played 16 years with the Patriots, had had a longer tenure with the team. Terms of Brown's reported 1-year deal were not disclosed.

Woo hoo!!
That makes my night. Even if he just stands on the sidelines and gets called for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' over and over and over.... ;)

Team-First Player
Troy Brown is the epitome of a team player. As long as he continues to accept his place in the league and agrees to small deals, he will retire a Patriot. And knowing the kind of man Troy is, there is no reason to think he would ever demand more or something different from the team.

Great to have him back in any capacity.

Roster Size
Troy Brown shouldn't be concerned that there are so many recievers on the roster, the other recievers should be concerned for their roster spot now that Brown was just signed.

True Nuff
While I don't think I'd put Brown's mad skills up against that of Stallworth's, I would say that he has the type of rapport with Brady that will likely warrant his being Brady's safety valve when things are bound up.
