New England Patriots announce cuts to 53-man roster

Patriots Announce 53-Man Roster
Testaverde Is 'Surprise' Cut; Seymour on PUP

The New England Patriots announced cuts down to their 53-man roster. There were very few, if any, surprises.

The big news is that defensive tackle Richard Seymour was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he is out at least until Week 7 and must be activated by Week 9 or be placed on Injured Reserve. That's not only big news, but bad news. In less than 24 hours, with the suspension of Rodney Harrison, the Patriots lose two key defensive players for all of September.

The Patriots announced their cuts, so the following is the deduced 53-man roster. Since Harrison and Asante Samuel (exemption through Sept. 10 or sooner if he's activated) do not count against the roster, New England actually has only 51 players on the active roster.

Here is the roster as it stands:

Star-divide

Offense

Quarterback
Tom Brady
Matt Cassel
Matt Gutierrez
Vinny Testaverde is cut. I predicted the Patriots could sign him to coach and activate him as a player should they trade Cassel.

Running Backs
Laurence Maroney
Sammy Morris
Kevin Faulk
Heath Evans (FB)
No surprises. Quinton Smith is cut.

Wide Receiver
Randy Moss
Donté Stallworth
Wes Welker
Jabar Gaffney
Kelley Washington
Reche Caldwell
No real surprises. Washington beats out Bam Childress, who was cut, along with Kelvin Kight, Chris Dunlap and C.J. Jones. The Herald's rumor that Moss could be cut turns out to be just that.

Tight End
Ben Watson
Kyle Brady
David Thomas
Thomas is activated off the PUP. Marcellus Rivers, Garrett Mills (also a FB) and Brian Jones are cut.

Offensive Line
Center
Dan Koppen
Russ Hochstein (also guard)
Guard
Logan Mankins
Stephen Neal
Billy Yates
Tackle
Nick Kaczur
Matt Light
Ryan O'Callaghan
Wesley Britt
Veteran Gene Mruczkowski and rookies Clint Oldenbrug, Corey Hillard and Mike Elgin are cut. Expect to see a couple of these guys on the practice squad.

Defense

Defensive Line
Ty Warren
Vince Wilfork
Jarvis Green
Mike Wright
Le Kevin Smith
Kareem Brown
Brown gets a spot as Seymour is placed on PUP. Rashad Moore, Zach West and Santonio Thomas are cut.

Inside Linebacker
Tedy Bruschi
Junior Seau
Eric Alexander
Larry Izzo
Rookie Oscar Lua placed on IR. Corey Mays is cut.

Outside Linebacker
Adalius Thomas (and ILB)
Mike Vrabel (and ILB)
Rosevelt Colvin
Pierre Woods
Justin Rogers is cut

Cornerback
Ellis Hobbs
Randall Gay
Brandon Meriweather
Tory James
Asante Samuel *
Dante Wesley and Larry Anam are cut.
* Samuel doesn't count against the 53-man roster until Sept. 10 or before if he is activated. The Patriots are probably planning to activate him, so they're not bothering to keep someone signed on just to cut them in a week.

Safety
Eugene Wilson
James Sanders
Willie Andrews
Mel Mitchell
Rashad Baker
Rodney Harrison **
** Harrison doesn't count against the 53-man roster during his four-week suspension.

Special Teams
Placekicker
Stephen Gostkowski
Punter
Chris Hanson
Long Snapper
Lonie Paxton

The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss presents his roster breakdown and the Boston Herald's John Tomase discusses the cuts and a brief roster analysis.

Poll
How much will Richard Seymour's assignment to the PUP affect the Patriots?
It's devastating! All is lost!

It's bad, and it could put New England in an early hole.

It's important, but not the end of the world.

It's no big deal. The Patriots are plenty deep to survive 6 weeks.

I'm surprised the Pats cut
Marcellus Rivers. He seemed to play well during the preseason.

RIVERS
I was too.  He did look good.  They must be confident that Kyle Brady and Thomas are healthy.  I think that there was some concern about the depth at TE, but management must be satisfied with the info they have.

Yes.
I just hope the Pats get Rogers and CJ Jones onto their practice squad without other teams scooping them off waivers first. Jones has done a great job in the return game and Rogers looks to be doing a pretty good job in his transition from DE to OLB.

I'm also surprised to see that Bam Childress didn't make the team over Kelley Washington. I guess from experience and historical standpoint, it makes sense, but Childress does a good job when he gets to play.

Let's hope Seymour isn't sorely missed before week 6. When the Pats were without Seymour in 2005, it was devastating because they also lost Harrison and Bruschi. Bruschi is here, but they will be without Harrison too. This might be a cause for concern...
