Report: Belichick fined $500K, Patriots lose 2 high draft picks

Belichick Fined or Suspended?
Game Forfeiture Off the Table
Team Will Lose Draft Pick(s)

According to a report by Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV (Channel 5, Boston), the NFL will fine New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick $500,000 and take two first-day draft picks from the team.

Meanwhile, Don Banks and Peter King of CNNSI say the league is weighing a multiple-game suspension of Belichick and taking a single high-round draft pick.

Update [2007-9-13 19:34:25 by tommasse]::
Lynch attributed his information merely to "sources" and that Belichick has not yet been notified by the league. That notification is expect Friday by fax. The half-million dollar fine cannot be paid by the team or ownership, according to Lynch, and the draft picks could be a first- and third-rounder.

King and Banks said several options are still being considered, but one item has been taken off the table: forfeiture of Sunday's 38-14 win over the New York Jets. The duo attribute their info to "NFL sources."

Their primary prediction includes a two- or three-game suspension for Belichick and a first-, second- or third-round draft pick. Other considerations vary in severity, but the league is reportedly trying to spread the punishment over Belichick and the team, and not one or the other.

In our poll ...

If a lower-tier team, say Detroit or Cleveland, had been caught stealing defensive signals, would the uproar be as great? Would the league's punishment be as severe?

Think about it before you decide. If Seattle, a top-tier NFC team, beat the snot out of bottom-feeding Detroit and caught one of the Lions employees with an unauthorized video camera on the sideline, would the story be so sensational?

Would the league make just as much an example out of Rod Marinelli? Would he be fined a half-mil? Would he be suspended? Would a team like the Lions, who can so ill afford to lose a single draft pick, much less a high-round pick, much less multiple high-rounders, be assessed such a severe penalty? Would anti-Lions fans and media bullies come out of the woodwork and pile on?

I don't know. It's definitely possible. What do you think?

I'll post again tomorrow when the official punishment is known, and we can debate its fairness then.

BigBlueIdiot has lambasted my simple philosophical poll question, proving he has a vendetta against me and this web site. I asked the question, as most information sources post polls: To present alternative viewpoints, to inspire discussion, and to obtain the feedback of its consumers. Current results of the poll, thanks to you, my loyal readers, support this concept.

But, Pinhead found it reason to attack me. But that's because he's not interested in the kind of debate in which adults participate. He engages solely in insults and name-calling. It's just another opportunity for him to advance his agenda of bile-spewing hatred.

IMHO
Your BigBlueEgo name was a much better than BigBlueIdiot.  And no Nancy Grace reference this time?  You are losing your touch... :)

You have to change it up sometimes.
I know it's the same old tired act over there. Like a good comedian, I try to come up with new material now and then. Besides, I don't allow the kinds of nicknames that would be more accurate. The good news is: You noticed... :)

I don't understand the people voting for ...
"Far more harsh." Why would the comish impose a harsher penalty on Detroit? Unless the implication is that the penalties imposed on New England would have a more dire effect on the Lions. Anyone with a different theory?

Par for the course
They can't do anything without trying to rig things in their favor.

Guilty by association
Are you saying that becuase he's a Pats fan, that he's being hypocritcal because the Patriots violated a league rule? So, anyone that has rooted for the Patriots is not allowed to even make a joke about anything like this without being hypocritical? Maybe you mean something else, but I'm not aware of RSNexile rigging any polls...

What hypocrisy?
No one here is saying Belichick didn't break the rules. No one here is saying he didn't cheat. There's no hypocrisy here.

Apparently, however, there is plenty of stupidity, and it's all coming from trolls like you.

a couple of things
one, bigblueshoe is an idiot most of the time.

two, the penalty was more than fair and probably should have been a little harsher. draft picks should have stayed the same and belicheck should have been suspended for a handful of games.

last, to say that another team would have been punished less is completely arrogant. i know, you guys are the greatest thing ever and since you are successful and the patriots, goodell doesnt like you and penalizes you more than any other team. WHAT!?!? please dont even bring up something like that up, it just shows off your arrogance towards the rest of the NFL.

I can't speak for anyone else
but I think that the commissioner would have penalized Detroit less than N.E. because they are (or at least have been,) a bad team, not because he hates the Patriots. Obviously it's merely hypothetical, and guessing at the inner workings of Goodell's mind is all the evidence I have, so take it for what it's worth. I don't think it is arrogant to think that the punishment might have been less for a struggling team, I would have thought the same thing if the Colts had been caught.

Where did I say these things?
Where did I say that I thought Detroit would be penalized less? No where. I posed a question.

Where did I say the punishment was severe because Goodell doesn't like the Patriots? No where. I never even implied such a thing.

Geez, talk about arrogance.

They all tape!
Taping is taping no matter if you do it from the sidelines or a box seat. All the teams are taping and have been for years. If you don't believe that then ask yourself why all the coaches cover their mouths when giving instructions.

BB may have been blatant about it, and should have been fined for breaking an existing rule, but to say the Patriots are doing it and the other teams are not is naive, or spin.
