Super Bowl XLII: Patriots 14, Giants 17
Ultimate Humble Pie
Giants Beat Patriots in Super Bowl XLII
Undefeated season denied.
Congratulations to the New York Giants.
Update [2008-2-3 23:19:5 by tommasse]:
The Giants defense played a great game. Despite New England having all their offensive linemen healthy, they were unable to give Tom Brady enough time to make better passes, and the running game couldn't get much going.
Tom Coughlin is a fantastic coach, and he and his staff devised a great game plan and made the key adjustments. Both coaches made adjustments at halftime leading to second-half scores, but Coughlin's staff made the key adjustments down the stretch.
The Giants were unbelievably lucky on several plays, especially on that last drive -- Asante Samuel muffing what could have been a game-ending interceptions, David Tyree somehow holding on to that deep pass to the Patriots 24 with just over a minute left.
But that's football. Those are the bounces. Those are the breaks. Every champion has its fair share of luck. Champions make the most of it. Tonight the Giants did. They played the better game. They played several amazing games in the playoffs. They deserve to be called Super Bowl Champions.
Your New England Patriots have nothing of which to be ashamed. They came within 3 points of something most of us could hardly comprehend. They came up just short, and you feel bad for guys like Junior Seau and Tedy Bruschi, who may have played their last games in the NFL. We'll wait and see.
The pursuit of next year's title starts .. well, maybe not tomorrow. But soon. You can count on it.
Congratulations to the New England Patriots on one absolutely amazing season. It's been a tremendous ride. It's unfortunate that it had to end as it did, but the sun will rise tomorrow and Life will go on.
Update [2008-2-3 23:45:50 by tommasse]:
One more update for tonight ...
The Patriots did set or tie more records. It's been that kind of season:
- Wes Welker caught 11 passes, tying him with Deion Branch for most receptions in a Super Bowl. (Common thread: Tom Brady)
- Brady broke Joe Montana's record for career completions in Super Bowls. Montana had 83. I'm not sure where Brady stands, but it's more than that.

I agree
Overall the Giants played the better game, and the team that played better won. I had wished the Pats would be the better team, but in the end the Giants DEFINITELY played the better game, and they won. Congrats to the Giants for how they played.

No "Luck" Needed
Champions make things happen, not just sit back and hope things will go their way. The Giants did a great job in preperation and making adjustments in the game. They came to play. They didn't need "luck" to be on their side. Don't be a sore loser and start blaming it on what could have been an interception. We can all play that game. If Smith caught the ball instead of the play ending up in an interception, the Giants could've scored again. You can throw all the scenarios you want in there, but point blank, the Giants were the better team.

Just brutal
I for one am just going to keep on enjoying the Patriots, each and every year--to me they are the greatest TEAM around.
PS How kick ass are Faulk and Welker...

I was "ok" with losing
Now, the bigger issue. Even watching the game, I knew that that game was NOTHING compared to what we are about to go through, as patriot nation. Spygate 2 is going to kick into full gear, and I cant help but wish I could fast forward a few months and be on the other end of it. I also hate that Tedy Bruschi and Jr Seau and perhaps even BB will consider retiring, and have to go out on these sour notes. Not only the loss, but the humiliation of being called cheaters. I am sick for them. They deserve better. The SB pales in comparison to the legacy, and I dont think I am going to enjoy the media attention and the attempt to destroy their legacy one little bit. For the record, I think someone turned a mole hill into a mountain here, but given the ridiculous "cheatriots" crap, it will not just go away, even if it is proven the huge lie it is.
I was raised loving these Patriots, I root for the laundry. But in the last few years, I have truly come to root for them as men, as people. And I hate what I see in the NFL right now, the disrespect and cruelty to them as people. Much as they (and I) love the game, I am not so sure I would want to be a part of it any longer. When TMZ is the news source, we have lost something.

agree
I give the Giants credit for bringing their game, but by the end of that game it was a coin flip. Both teams played tough and it could easily have gone either way.
I don't think I will watch ESPN again until Baseball season...except for the Celtics playoff games I guess.
But we should feel confident that the 18 teams we beat were better than the 17 the Dolphins did, and we were one bounce away from doing the impossible in today's league. I hope we come back and play hard next year, and let people know they haven't seen the last of us.

Still am upset
This team didn't flaunt their wins, refused to be brought into "greatest" or "undefeated" discussions until badgered to consider it by the media vampires after they had already made it to the Super Bowl.
Even our Seattle "friends" had to blog, email, and call(on speaker) with the hoots and hollers of them all cheering for the Giants.
So, I'm still upset, but will get over it in time. It's just hard right now.

I am a Dolphin Fan
I respect the season the Patriots had, a perfect regular season, 18-1 is something to be very proud of. With that being said The Giants just plain out beat the Pats, they were the better on Sunday night. NY's D-line dominated the entire game. A very entertaining SB.
With not understanding the "hate", you are kidding right? Do you know how many teams the Pats ran the score up on this year? BB didn't even respect the (his own) players enough to stay on the field for the Giants to run out the clock. Brady laughing at Plax saying they would "only" score 17, that came across very smug. I don't know enough about "spygate" and "spygate 2", even though if they did record the Rams walk-thru, thats just plain wrong.
I admire your organization, your in it year in and out, very commendable. Your team just comes across as a arrogant, I'm bettter than everyone, even the NFL, snobby team. They win alot so they are hated just like the 49ers and Cowboys were, be proud of that, I wish the Dolphins were.
PS ummm 18 and done, better luck next year. Sorry, I love Miami, couldn't let it pass.-)

moment
I, for one, am very proud of the Patriots and what they accomplished this year. I think if you take away all the media bullsh*t more people would see what they did was pretty great.
I love football and I love the Pats. Not gonna change anytime soon.
Congrats to the Giants. They played very well.

Go Pats
After coming so close to 19-0 it hurts to come up short like that but as you said, the sun came up today and there will be another Patriots season this Fall. As a Pats fan even though the ultimate goal was not achieved, 2007-08 was still a season to be proud of.
GO PATS

gimme a break
The chargers trash-talked the Pats before that game wickedly, the small bit of logo dancing was a reaction to that. Of course the media would rather support golden boy LT and Philip 'I'll even argue with the Fans' Rivers.
The Pats are amazingly reserved and never trashtalk off the field. Once they leave the field the media has to torture them to get comments.

It's true.
In fact, it looked to me during the season that some of the players were a little uncomfortable when Belichick made a point of adding extra unnecessary points at the end of some games.
I also speculate that Brady, who is a stand up guy, dildn't enjoy playing the "injury report" game all year. That was obviously out of character for him.
In my opinion, the burden of poor sportsmanship falls on the shoulders of a coach bent on vengence and giving the rest of the league the finger, even walking off the field before the game ended.
Tommasse censored an earlier comment I made about Belichick being a d**k. I apologize for that, but I can't help but think there are a lot of fans and maybe some players too who are somewhat frustrated by his one man vendetta against all who criticise him.
The really sad thing is that he is so good that none of it was ever necessary.

I support Coach B
by 1TruePatriot on Feb 4, 2008 10:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Belichick
Look, I never said the team didn't support him. Why shouldn't they? He's one of the most focused, crafty, determined coaches in the history of football. You can support someone even if you are embarrassed by some of his behavior. It's the old "means justifying the end" philosophy.
A lot of coaches don't like the fact that they have to sit in front of the media after every game and get their egos bruised. Most just handle it in stride. Some, like the Tuna, release their frutrations with sarcasm. Belichick just wastes everybody's time by being a bump on a log, and won't say anything except drivel.
So it should not surprise you that a lot of people think he is a d**k. I suppose you can justify his behavior by claiming he is just keeping everything close to his vest but I, and most football fans outside of your immediate fan base, consider his demeaner rude and charicteristic of poor sportsmanship.

One more comment ..the whole spygate thing
I remember when the Raiders(I think) bugged the dressing room of some other team. Over the years there have been countless other examples of rigging the turf, reading lips, and other shenanigans, but only spygate escalated lit to the plateau it now rests on.
I think it is a fair statement that Belichick's deliberate stoking of the fans and media created an intense desire to get back at him, blowing the whole issue out of proportion.
So now the team has to suffer a ridiculous amount of scrutiny, because (in my opinion) Belichick thinks it's him against the world. A self fulfilling phrophosy, since he made so many people hate him.
If Cowher or Parcells had been the coach, spygate would have been laughed off, no matter how many games in a row they had won.
But take heart...our coach changed his ways even though I didn't think he ever could. Maybe Bill can too.
