Time to move on .. Patriots STILL the best in the NFL

Time to Move On
Patriots Still Consistently the Best

If you're still "mourning" the New England Patriots' Super Bowl XLII loss, stop it. Remember who we are: We're fans of the best week-in, week-out football team in the National Football League.

Sure, it really stinks that New York beat them Sunday. Sure, it would have been unbelievable to have celebrated the only undefeated 19-win season in history, the greatest single season ever (and it arguable still is).

But this team -- your team -- still is the envy of every team in the league and their fans. Thirty other teams didn't go to Phoenix. Thirty-one other teams weren't on history's doorstep. Thirty-one other teams were never within 40 seconds of 19-0 and probably never will be. Still only three teams have more Super Bowl wins than New England, and only one of those has won since the year 2000 (Pittsburgh). Thirty-one other teams have won no more than one Super Bowl since 2000; your New England Patriots have won three, and were just a couple plays from five.

Yes, the Giants won Sunday, and deservedly so. They outplayed and out-coached New England. Tom Coughlin's staff devised a fantastic game plan, and the players executed superbly. But don't believe for a second that they're a "better team" because of it.

The Giants are certainly better than their 10-6 regular-season record, but they're not remotely an 18-0 team. I said before the game that New York was probably the worst matchup for New England. I said in my 5 Questions with Big Blue View before the game that if the Patriots and Giants played 10 games, the Giants would win at least 4. They're 1-1.

But let's remember what happened this season:

Star-divide

  • The Patriots beat 5-0 Dallas in just the fourth meeting of teams with records of 5-0 or better.
  • The Patriots beat 8-0 Indy in the first-ever meeting between teams with records of 8-0 or better (New England was 9-0).
  • The Patriots beat six of the 11 other playoff teams during the regular season (and it would have been seven if Indy didn't fold in Week 17).
  • Including the playoffs, the Patriots beat 7 of the teams with the top 9 records in the league. The other two were Green Bay, who they didn't play, and themselves.
  • The Patriots broke dozens of the most coveted team and individual single season records, including most points scored, most touchdowns, most consecutive wins, most wins, largest point differential, and so many more. It's an impressively long list.
Your New England Patriots are currently the odds-on favorite to win Super Bowl XLIII. At 3-1, no one else is even close. The Chargers are 11-2, Colts are 12-1 and Cowboys are 14-1. (The Giants are 25-1. Does that sound like the "better team"?) The Patriots are as low as 2-1 and as high as a whopping 4-1. Other books have the Colts or Cowboys second, but never at better odds than San Diego's 11-2 above.

You'll hear people say, "But the Ravens almost beat them," or something similarly ludicrous.

Right, and then the Ravens got crushed by Indy, but Indy lost to San Diego, and New England beat the Chargers. Also, the Ravens allowed the Dolphins their only win of the season, and New England crushed Miami twice. It's a nonsense argument. Any team can beat any other any given Sunday. This past Sunday was New York's given Sunday.

And for those people talking about a "Manning Dynasty," as if that counts, as if the Colts players care if the Giants have Super Bowl rings or vice versa, remember this:

Archie Manning + Peyton Manning + Eli Manning = 2 Super Bowl wins
Tom Brady = 3 Super Bowl wins

But this is a team sport. Since 2000:

New England = 3 Super Bowl wins
Rest of the league = 5

Yeah, Sunday stunk. But the 20 weeks before were sweet, sweet, sweet. Upset about Sunday? Absolutely. Devastated? No where near what the coaches and players probably feel.

But would I rather be a fan of any of the 31 other NFL teams this decade? Not .. a .. chance.

As it does every year, the new pursuit of perfection starts today.

Let's get psyched for next year: The Patriots Strike Back!

Well Stated
We are the team of the decade, the team that broke from the molds of the past and now set a new standard in the free agency era. It is going to be an interesting off season this year. We have a lot of players that are aging or up for a new contract. We also have some young talent on the rise, Mulroney, Merriweather, and yes Hobbs. Sammy Morris was a bright spot when he was healthy. And we may yet see something out of WR  Jackson. So hears to a promising future.

You beat me to it!
I was going to write a diary seeing pretty much what you stated, but yours is better. ;-)

I am encouraged.  The Giants played arguably their best game in a long time and the Patriots were average.  Still, NEW YORK ONLY WON BY 3 POINTS!!  Let that sink in a bit.  Got it?  Okay.  So the Pats played well below their capability and were still within a few plays of making history.  What does that say about our team?  Simply, the best.

I am quite sure Belichick, the coaching staff and the players are killing themselves over this one.  As fans, we're heartbroken but as players, they must be devastated having carried the weight of history and a hopeful fanbase on their backs.  The need our support more than ever.

I am starting to feel sorry for 2008 opponents.  Hubris?  Ultimate homerism?  You bet.  I pity opposing teams as Belichick will most likely turn this into the ultimate "Bulletin Board" moment.  He will obliterate teams with a scorched earth policy.

And when there in the SB again, there will be no doubt.

I don't want to hear
one single complaint about "running up the score."  In fact, I would Love to hear that that Giants Super Bowl gloat-a-thon was played in the locker room before every game.

There are some damn good players on that team that will breathing mad for redemption.

I can't wait to see the carnage.

OK....
I'm a new commenter here, I'd just like to respond to the following for the comments in this article and from the article itself. A warning, I can't stand the Pats, and I'm a Seahawks fan....

    * The Patriots beat 5-0 Dallas in just the fourth meeting of teams with records of 5-0 or better.
    * The Patriots beat 8-0 Indy in the first-ever meeting between teams with records of 8-0 or better (New England was 9-0).
    * The Patriots beat six of the 11 other playoff teams during the regular season (and it would have been seven if Indy didn't fold in Week 17).
    * Including the playoffs, the Patriots beat 7 of the teams with the top 9 records in the league. The other two were Green Bay, who they didn't play, and themselves.
    * The Patriots broke dozens of the most coveted team and individual single season records, including most points scored, most touchdowns, most consecutive wins, most wins, largest point differential, and so many more. It's an impressively long list.

Impressive.....but the Patriots didn't win the Super Bowl, that's all that matters. Ask the Colts of 2005, they beat everybody, including New England. Then they folded against the Steelers, no Super Bowl.

I don't know, it depends how many road games the Giants play.:)

I am encouraged.  The Giants played arguably their best game in a long time and the Patriots were average.  Still, NEW YORK ONLY WON BY 3 POINTS!!

But the Patriots being average does not equal another team being average. If the Colts were average that day, or the Chargers, they would've gotten blown out.

I am starting to feel sorry for 2008 opponents.

Enjoy it, Brady will go deaf in Qwest Field.

We are the team of the decade

I agree.....not only were you part of The Tuck Rule, you were also part of a video taping scandal that I thought was not a big deal, until the Super Bowl thing was brought up. You were also a part of being considered a dynasty....but dynasties finish the job, the Patriots didn't. And dynasties don't win 3 Super Bowls by a combined 9 points.

Granted, the Patriots deserve plenty of credit for finishing 16-0. However, you have to finish the job, to be the best in the NFL, you have to win the prize, not take 2nd place.

Let the bashing of me begin.

Let us know when Seattle wins something
You know, like three Super Bowls. Or 18 straight games (Patriots have done that twice). "Tom Brady will go deaf in Qwest Field"? You should familiarize yourself with that saying about glass houses.

I'm appalled
Haven't you heard Seattle sports teams aren't allowed to win?

I will refuse to believe that first Super Bowl ever happened because of the BS Tuck Rule BTW.

Yes, you guys have won 18 in a row twice...but if the goal was 19-0 from the start the 2nd time around, and you failed to do that by beating a team from the NFC...eh....I think that 2nd one went to waste.

Patriots ARE the team of the decade
What exactly is your point?  Is it the Official Rules of the NFL that you're having a problem with?

By your standards, the Patriots fall short of the required amount of points that it takes to win a Super Bowl.  The NFL sees it differently.  Winning by 30 or 3, all that counts is having at least 1 point more than the other team.  A win is a win is a win.  String a few of those Super Bowl wins together and you get A DYNASTY!  Go Patriots!

The Tuck rule seems to be giving you fits too, but as it exists in the official rule book, it needs to be called by the referees just like any other penalty you may not approve of.

I agree with you that there is no prize for 2nd place, except for the knowledge that you beat out 30 other teams for that particular privilege.  You're also right that this time the Patriots didn't "finish the job" (just like your Seahawks didn't "finish the job" in 2006...or any other year come to think of it), but they sure played the finest regular season of any team in history and still have a better then decent chance of getting to and winning the SB next year.

Does the breaking of the video-taping rule bother you?  Well to be honest, it bothered me too.  The Patriots and coach were fined heavily and embarrassed publicly, and if it weren't for a senator who is a rabid Eagles' fan that never got over losing the Super Bowl, this thing would be done with.

One last point.  The "Super Bowl thing" you mentioned doesn't exist.  Let the parties in question cough up some credible evidence and then it can be dealt with.  Until then it's just rumor and gossip.  Last time I checked, rumors and gossip weren't punishable offenses by the NFL.

Keep the faith!

So Let Me Get This Straight
(just like your Seahawks didn't "finish the job" in 2006...or any other year come to think of it)

The team that wasn't going to be considered a great team by any means, was a 7 point underdog against the Steelers, they were supposed to finish the job?

I give you credit, the Patriots sure as heck were impressive in their 16-0 season, obviously it won't be matched unless the NFL feels like fiddling around with the rules again.

I love it....
when people are so unhappy with the fact their own team isn't that good that they have to look for someone else's team to go bad mouth.  Every arguement you made is based on OPINION and not fact... you actually tried to dispute FACTS with opinions.

Just wondering
Unless the Pats win another SB or two, they are defintely thre worst of the decade teams. Not saying that its a bad thing to be the team of the decade. But honestly, if you lose in the SB when  other dynsastys did not, you simply are not as good as them. Sure you only lost by three. Fine, you want that 3 point SB lose back, then we'll take those 3 3 point SB wins. They are not top 10 teams of all time since they could not finish the job. On to the reason why I wrote this comment. The tuck rule was a horrible call. He pump faked it. It was terrible. But just wondering, wouldn't that mean that it was inteltional grounding.
