Patriots to trade for WR Moss
Moss in New England for physical

In a long-anticipated deal, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the New England Patriots will trade a 4th-round pick (No. 127 Update [2007-4-29 11:43:30 by tommasse]: Actually, it is the No. 110 pick) in today's draft to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Randy Moss.

Moss is reportedly in New England for a physical and is expected to restructure his highly skewed contract before the deal becomes official. (I'm sure the NFLPA will want to look at that before signing off, too.). The deal is expected to be complete today.

Moss has been in trouble with the law and with his teammates in the past. He has admitted several times to "not trying" on every play.

The price of a 4th-round pick is low, but how high the price?

Update [2007-4-29 11:13:56 by tommasse]:
Moss's troubled past is well documented (you can start with Wikipedia's Randy Moss page. There's also a concise, boxed chronicle from USA Today, but it's a tad outdated (published Sept. 25, 2002).

Update [2007-4-29 11:38:16 by tommasse]:
According to ESPN's Mortensen, the trade is now official.

Update [2007-4-29 14:36:9 by tommasse]:
The Patriots have posted this press release on their official site.

Good. He's at least a backup, and worth a 4th-rounder.

Average. It's a wash, depending who they draft, even if Moss stays clean.

Fair. Too high a price for too troubled a player.
