Patriots Announce 53-Man Roster
Testaverde Is 'Surprise' Cut; Seymour on PUP
The New England Patriots announced cuts down to their 53-man roster. There were very few, if any, surprises.
The big news is that defensive tackle Richard Seymour was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he is out at least until Week 7 and must be activated by Week 9 or be placed on Injured Reserve. That's not only big news, but bad news. In less than 24 hours, with the suspension of Rodney Harrison, the Patriots lose two key defensive players for all of September.
The Patriots announced their cuts, so the following is the deduced 53-man roster. Since Harrison and Asante Samuel (exemption through Sept. 10 or sooner if he's activated) do not count against the roster, New England actually has only 51 players on the active roster.
Here is the roster as it stands:
Vinny Testaverde is cut. I predicted the Patriots could sign him to coach and activate him as a player should they trade Cassel.
Heath Evans (FB)
No surprises. Quinton Smith is cut.
No real surprises. Washington beats out Bam Childress, who was cut, along with Kelvin Kight, Chris Dunlap and C.J. Jones. The Herald's rumor that Moss could be cut turns out to be just that.
Thomas is activated off the PUP. Marcellus Rivers, Garrett Mills (also a FB) and Brian Jones are cut.
Russ Hochstein (also guard)
Veteran Gene Mruczkowski and rookies Clint Oldenbrug, Corey Hillard and Mike Elgin are cut. Expect to see a couple of these guys on the practice squad.
Le Kevin Smith
Brown gets a spot as Seymour is placed on PUP. Rashad Moore, Zach West and Santonio Thomas are cut.
Rookie Oscar Lua placed on IR. Corey Mays is cut.
Adalius Thomas (and ILB)
Mike Vrabel (and ILB)
Justin Rogers is cut
Asante Samuel *
Dante Wesley and Larry Anam are cut.
* Samuel doesn't count against the 53-man roster until Sept. 10 or before if he is activated. The Patriots are probably planning to activate him, so they're not bothering to keep someone signed on just to cut them in a week.
Rodney Harrison **
** Harrison doesn't count against the 53-man roster during his four-week suspension.
How much will Richard Seymour's assignment to the PUP affect the Patriots?

It's devastating! All is lost!
It's bad, and it could put New England in an early hole.
It's important, but not the end of the world.
It's no big deal. The Patriots are plenty deep to survive 6 weeks.
