Scouting Report: Malcolm Jenkins

Malcolm Jenkins

6'1, 201 pounds | Ohio State | Corner

I miss Asante, I miss him bad.  Whether or not we could've retained him is anybody's guess.  He may have been PO'd after being franchised for 2007.  He may have hated chowdah.  Or, Belichick and Pioli tried their usual tactic of cheaping it out for overlooked gems.  My opinion?  I think they owed Moss a payday and Randy rated higher on that list than Asante.  Be that as it may, I miss him.

During the preseason, we carried at least 8 corners at one time.  Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley are doing a decent job and may have improved greatly over the course of the season, but I'm not seeing "star" corner written on them anytime soon.  Our veteran, Ellis Hobbs, is serviceable, but I don't think he's a franchise guy.  It's time to pay for a defensive back and corner isn't a bad place to start.

The possibility of Jenkins lasting until our 23rd first round pick are slim to none, but one can dream.  He's one of the top CB's in college ball and the word "shutdown" is used often:

Jenkins has as talented as they come as a corner. He has excellent size, athleticism, and speed. His size, strength, and aggressiveness make him a force against the run. His natural athleticism and speed make him a special prospect. He shows the ability to turn and run with just about any receiver in the country. With all his physical skills, toughness, and ball skills you’re looking at a potential shut down corner in the NFL.

No offense to the current crop of guys, but I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing a star at corner.
