Patriots Private Workout: Kentucky WR Chris Matthews

According to his personal twitter account, Kentucky wide receiver Chris Matthews will be having a private workout on Wednesday with the New England Patriots.

Matthews, who stands at 6'5" and 225 pounds, has outstanding size for the wide receiver position. He isn't the fastest or most explosive receiver off the line (runs a sub 4.6 40 yard dash), but makes up for it with his great size and physicality. He is also a surprisingly deceptive route runner for his size, and is good at finding the soft spots in zones. He is also a very capable blocker, and is a great red zone threat, with the ability to go up and get the ball at its highest point.

Playing along side Randall Cobb, Matthews had a terrific spike in production his senior season, nearly doubling his number of receptions (31 to 62), more than doubling his yardage (354 to 925), and tripling his touchdown total with nine total endzone grabs.

While Matthews isn't considered a top day one or day two prospect, he is rising up draft boards and could be a potential steal in the sixth or seventh rounds. For a full scouting report on Matthews, check out the National Football Post.
