Strengths: Plays like a freight truck and can bull over any linemen. Has the lateral agility and strength to man the two gap defense. Monstrous size. Strong as an ox and can hold hold off an opposing lineman with one hand to shed the block and wrap up the ball carrier. Holds his ground against double teams, completely throws aside non-linemen, easily pushes back single blockers. Stout against the run, pushes the pocket against the pass.
Weaknesses: Lacks the quickness to rush the quarterback from the edge, but will have to work to the inside. I watched and all I could think was, "defensive tackle." Doesn't seem to have the quickness to thrive at the 5 technique so I think he might be a NT if he puts on 10-15 pounds. Doesn't really have the 5 technique skill set. Liable to jump offsides. Accepted improper benefits and was suspended for two games.
Why and Why Not the Patriots after the jump, and my final verdict!
Why the Patriots?: Dareus is touted as the best 3-4 DE in the draft and he's coming from Nick Saban's system in Alabama. He has the attitude to do well with the Patriots and he has a very strong frame. He's a play maker and he can play all over the defensive line.
Why Not the Patriots?: He's a top pick, which means the Patriots will have to sell the draft to move up and take him. He's a tweener in the sense that he doesn't really have a position in the 3-4 defense. Too small to be a NT, not fast or athletic enough to be a DE.
Verdict: I would pass on Dareus. I don't think he really fits the Patriots defense and he's way too expensive. I feel like Cameron Jordan, Cameron Heyward, and J.J. Watt would all be superior pass rushers at the next level. While Dareus is a stout run stuffer, I don't see him thriving with the Patriots. Pass.
