Belichick-Era Patriots Top 10 Successes #3
Name: Matt Light
College: Purdue
Drafted: 2nd Round, 48th Overall, 2001
Position: Left Tackle
Years with Team: 10
Where is he now? New England Patriots Starting Left Tackle (UFA)
Comments: One of the main things that bothers me about Matt Light has nothing to do with him as a player or a person, it has to do with his perception by Patriots fan base. Put it this way: The Patriots are lucky as hell to have Matt Light as their starting left tackle. Light has protected Tom Brady's blindside for a decade, and has helped Brady remain one of the most untouched quarterbacks in the league during that era. In the process, he's won three Super Bowls with the team, been named to three Pro Bowls, and has been named to the All-Pro squad twice. And since his rookie year, he's played and started all sixteen games in all but one season. Most teams would spend a top ten pick on that type of production. Yeah, he occasionally struggles against speed rushers, but for the most part, has been a top ten tackle in the league. For a late second round pick, you could certainly call him one of the biggest draft successes of the Bill Belichick era.
