Round 6, Pick 193: Patriots Draft Markell Carter, OLB, Central Arkansas

Well, the Patriots finally selected a front seven player. However, I doubt it's a player most people had highlighted on their draft boards. With the 193rd pick in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Central Arkansas defensive end / outside linebacker Markell Carter.

Standing at over 6'4" and 252 lbs, Markell Carter has the ideal size and speed the Patriots look for in their 3-4 outside linebackers. He also runs a 4.7 40 yard dash, and has the ability to get to the quarterback with his speed rush, rip move, or an adequate bull rush.

Obviously, Carter is not going to come in and be a starter. Unless he really impresses, he will likely start his career on the practice squad. However, his length gives him some intriguing upside, and if he's developed right, who knows what can happen. Pick Grade: B-

The Patriots have one pick remaining at pick 219 in the seventh round. I would like to see the team land another front seven player with that spot. I would like to see the team add another front seven player. Some intriguing options remain on the board at defensive end, such as Cedric Thornton and Lawrence Guy.
