Heading into the day, it appeared as if the New England Patriots would be stuck with the #3 or #4 seed. However, following a huge 28-16 upset win by the Indianapolis Colts over the Houston Texans, the Patriots are alive for a first round bye. All they need to do is win against the Miami Dolphins.
While the Broncos have the inside track for the #1 seed, the Patriots are still in contention there as well. If the Broncos lose against the Chiefs, and the Patriots beat the Dolphins, New England will clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
As for today's game, the Patriots will go full force against a division rival that has nothing to lose. And that's always a scary thought. The Patriots have a ton to play for obviously, and have done well historically against the Dolphins at home in December. This is the type of game that could give the Patriots a lot of momentum heading into the playoffs, and with the potential of an extra week before their next game, they'll want to close the season out strong.
