The Patriots are continuing to look at players that could potentially bolster the depth in their front seven. According to Shalise Manza Young, former Raiders defensive end / outside linebacker Trevor Scott will be visiting the Patriots.
Scott, 27, is a a 6'5" 255 lbs pass rusher that was selected by the Raiders in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Buffalo. In 2011, Scott played all sixteen games for the Raiders as a reserve, picking up seven tackles and no sacks. However, Scott started all ten games he played in 2010 and also started six of sixteen in 2009. For his career, Scott has played in 58 games and has picked up 97 total tackles and 13.5 sacks.
While Scott certainly wouldn't be an upgrade over the likes of Mark Anderson and Andre Carter, he appears to be a capable pass rusher with the potential to grow. He would be a nice depth addition for the Patriots' front seven.
According to ProFootballFocus.com, Scott picked up just 5 pressures in 251 total snaps played in 2011. He also graded out negatively against the run. However, in 2009, Scott picked up 19 pressures in 10 games played while picking up 43 tackles and seven sacks in 2010.
Overall, Scott likely wouldn't be a starting option for the Patriots. However, he could be a nice depth pick-up that could serve as a rotation piece along the defensive line regardless of what scheme the Patriots run.
Extra Point: The Washington Redskins have reportedly signed former Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather to a two year, $6 million contract. Not sure how he earned that much considering he wasn't even claimed by Washington when he was due just over $1 million after being cut by the Patriots (and then proceeded to sit on the bench for a good portion of the year in Chicago). But good for him, I guess.
