Week 2 Patriots Game Thread

New England Patriots (1-0) vs. Arizona Cardinals (1-0)

Cardinals Coverage: Revenge of the Birds

First-half notes:

  • The big news of the first half is the injury to tight end Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez went down in the first quarter when his ankle was rolled up on by Julian Edelman on a screen pass. Hernandez was assisted off the field, and his return was officially listed as "questionable."
  • The Patriots passing offense struggled throughout the majority of the first half. Tom Brady threw an interception on his first throw of the game (off a tipped pass at the line), and for much of the first time, had little to no time to throw the ball. He was sacked three times in the first half.
  • The team did have success running the football, with Stevan Ridley picking up 54 yards on 11 carries. Overall, not much to highlight on offense, as the Cardinals' have been physical up front, gotten to Brady, and have been disciplined against the play action. Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett have been particularly dominant on the line for the Cardinals.
  • Fortunately for the Patriots, their defense has been stellar in the first half. Strong first halves from Chandler Jones, Jerod Mayo, and Brandon Spikes. The Patriots have shut down the run for the most par thus far (aside from a Patrick Peterson "wildcat" run, and have been consistently pressuring Kevin Kolb. One stat that stands out: the Cardinals are 2/8 on third downs.
