With Aaron Hernandez likely out for at least the next several weeks, it makes sense that the Patriots could want to add another body to the tight end position. That being said, ESPN's James Walker is reporting that free agent tight end is visiting the Patriots (again) and has agreed to a one year deal with the team.
This doesn't necessarily mean the deal will be finalized. As you may remember, Winslow visited the Patriots two weeks ago, and didn't sign due to a failed physical (the Patriots instead opted to sign Michael Hoomanawanui).
But if things are finalized, Winslow will be a solid temporary replacement for the injured Aaron Hernandez. While he doesn't have the same athleticism or versatility as Hernandez, he is a good receiving tight end who can at least imitate Hernandez on the field for the Patriots. As Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston recently noted, the Patriots ran a two-tight end set every play in their season opener against the Titans, but due to the Hernandez injury, were only in the set for 22 plays against Arizona. The addition of Winslow will allow the Patriots to return to a higher percentage of two tight end sets.
Of course, we'll take a wait and see approach until this deal is finalized. But for now, it looks like Winslow could very well be the Patriots answer to the Aaron Hernandez injury. What are your thoughts on the (potential) addition?
