The New England Patriots announced that they have added running back/ wide receiver Sam McGuffie to their practice squad. They have also released running back Cierre Wood to make room for him.
McGuffie is certainly an intriguing prospect who could compete for a spot on the roster in 2014. Undrafted out of Rice, McGuffie was the first player in school history to record 1,000 career yards as both a rusher and a receiver. He made a mid-career position change from running back to receiver, and donned the #39 number on the practice field for the Patriots (and received the “RB” label from the team).
Simply put, McGuffie has ridiculous athleticism. At his pro day, he put up a 40-yard dash time of 4.36, a 20 yard shuttle of 3.93, and a 3-cone drill of 6.57 seconds.
He’s on the smaller side at 5’10” and 200 lbs, so if you’re thinking Danny Woodhead, I'm not going to blame you. Of course, there’s a reason he’s available to be signed to the practice squad this late in the year… he’s raw. The bottom line is while you shouldn’t necessarily expect him to be the next Woodhead, he’s another intriguing player to watch heading into 2014 along with the likes of Mark Harrison and T.J. Moe.
