The New England Patriots made a few roster moves today, releasing veteran receiver Lavelle Hawkins as well as the versatile Nick McDonald. Rookie free agent, Perez Ashford, was also let go.
Neither Hawkins nor Ashford come as a huge surprise; both were relative long shots to make the final roster, particularly with the emergence of Kenbrell Thompkins over the past few months. McDonald, however, is a different story. He has been with the team since 2011 and has played all over the line, appearing in 16 games over the past two seasons with three starts. He has yet to practice this year, opening up camp on the active/physically unable to perform list, and reportedly failed his team physical, which is the one of the primary reasons for him being waived.
There's a chance the Patriots bring McDonald back should he pass a physical and any other relevant medical tests, but that remains to be seen.
Once again, the Patriots find themselves with some open roster spots. Whether or not they'll fill them also remains to be seen, as the first round of cuts isn't too far away.
