The New England Patriots received a boost to their receiving corps on Monday, as veteran receiver and free agent pick-up Danny Amendola returned to practice.
Amendola was initially hurt at some point during the Patriots’ week two preseason win over the Buccaneers. Amendola recorded six receptions for 71 yards in that game, including a touchdown. It appeared that he may have been hobbled after a catch on the second drive. The injury wasn’t considered serious, but Amendola hadn’t practiced or played since.
However, for a player who struggled to stay on the field during his four years in St. Louis, the injury was a cause for concern.
In his absence, Julian Edelman had been taking most of the reps as the top option slot receiver. The three other options at receiver who played significant snaps and are expected to make the roster: Kenbrell Thompkins, Aaron Dobson, and Josh Boyce.
If the Patriots are going to make a run in 2013, Amendola will need to be healthy. Amendola and the Patriots are lucky he avoided anything serious here.
