The cuts for the New England Patriots keep coming in -- which makes it a great time to go through and analyze the team's cuts. Here's what we have so far:
Yesterday, the team announced the release of ten players:
TE Jake Ballard: Never fully back to speed following microfracture surgery.
TE Daniel Fells: Beat out by Michael Hoomanawanui, similar costs.
DE Marcus Bernard: Mild surprise, as he had made some momentum in training camp.
WR Johnathan Haggerty: Long shot at wide receiver.
LB Mike Rivera: Made roster initially last year, could be brought back at some point
OL Luke Patterson: Long shot along the interior offensive line
FB Ben Bartholomew: 2nd fullback behind James Develin
DL Gilbert Pena: Recent pick-up was a longshot
OL Matt Stankiewitch: Could be a practice squad candidate
DL Scott Vallone: RFA who was buried on depth chart, was a longshot
And today, the reported cuts have been coming in fast and furious. Here's who we have stories on so far:
DL Justin Francis, DT Marcus Forston, LB Ja'Gared Davis, DB Kannoris Davis
There have also been a few cuts that we have yet to write about but have been reported by various news outlets. These players are:
RB George Winn: Ran hard in preseason finale, a definite practice squad candidate with upside
WR Quentin Sims: Played well throughout training camp, broke out in preseason finale with two touchdowns. Practice squad candidate.
OL Josh Kline: Developmental lineman also a practice squad candidate
CB Justin Green: Flashed at times in training camp, yet another practice squad candidate
That's 21 cuts for the Patriots since yesterday, meaning that, assuming I haven't missed anything (which is certainly possible), the Patriots have one more more to make before 6:00 PM ET to get to 53. Of course, the moves won't stop there, but they'll have to get to 53 nonetheless.
