The New England Patriots announced the release of 13 players this afternoon as well as the placement of veteran safety of Adrian Wilson on injured reserve. The full list of players cut:
DE Jermaine Cunningham
DL Justin Francis
P Zoltan Mesko
QB Tim Tebow
LB Jeff Tarpinian
DL Marcus Forston
LB Ja'Gared Davis
S Kanorris Davis
CB Justin Green
OL Chris McDonald
DB Stephon Morris
WR Quentin Sims
RB George Winn
There are a couple of changes from what we've previously reported. Jeff Tarpinian is a new name added to the cuts. Also, the Patriots have opted to hold on to offensive lineman Josh Kline as their 8th lineman. Chris McDonald has been released, when it seemed like he may have initially been safe.
Of course, the big news in all of this is that veteran safety Adrian Wilson has landed on injured reserve. He was expected to be a big part of the team's plans this year, signing a three year deal and immediately garnering comparisons to Rodney Harrison. It never really worked out in training camp however, as Wilson fell behind Steve Gregory on the depth chart and was consistently a step slow in coverage.
At this point, you have to wonder if Wilson will ever play a game in a Patriots uniform -- He will be 34 going on 35 in October of next year. It could also be possible that the Patriots work out an injury settlement with Wilson, especially if the injury isn't that serious.
The Patriots roster now stands at 51 players. Expect the roster shuffle to continue in the coming days as the team will undoubtedly scour the waiver wire for players that can help.
