The 2007 Patriots are the most dominant offense of all time

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> </xml><![endif]-->

A couple of days ago Rich showed how far ahead the 2007 Patriots were from an efficiency standpoint compared to the other great offenses of all time (or the last 15 years, that's how far Pro Football Reference's drive finder gets). Taking up on AMORALES suggestion I created a ranking based on the difference between the top teams and the respective league averages.

As expected the 2007 Patriots show up first. After that the rankings change a little compared to the list Rich provided. The 2013 Broncos drop all the way to 5, behind Peyton Manning's 2004 Colts. New on that list are the 2001 Rams who overtook the 2012 Patriots. Interesting is the fact, that none of these teams managed to win the Super Bowl. Four of them reached the game (the 2001 Rams, the 2007 and 2011 Patriots and the 2013 Broncos) with three of them losing to last minute heartbreaks that could have gone either way.

Defensively Rich's list was pretty much thrown out of the window after the first two teams. The 2002 Buccaneers squeezed past the 2000 Ravens (on decimals) to take up the top spot on this list. A real stunner, however, is the number 3 team: The 2009 New York Jets who allowed 236 points that year. While 236 points are respectable it becomes really noteworthy when one considers that the Jets gave up three fumbles, two interceptions and two kickoffs for touchdowns. The Jets' defense only allowed 187 points, or an average of 11.7 per game. Also sticking to the eye is the strength of the 2008 AFC's defense with three teams (the Ravens, Steelers and Titans) on this list.
