The Patriots have released wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins and promoted linebacker Ja'Gared Davis from the practice squad. Cornerback Brandon Browner and wide receiver Brian Tyms are both still inactive and likely will not have a decision made until Monday.
The decision to cut Thompkins has been a long time coming, even though he was one of the few receivers to gain the trust of quarterback Tom Brady. Thompkins is best known for his heroics in receiving the game winning touchdown against the Saints last season.
Thompkins was slowly phased out of the offense after receiving that touchdown and has been a healthy scratch two weeks this season. He provided little value on special teams.
Thanks to Thompkins for all the memories.
Davis will provide depth at linebacker and on special teams.
Browner and Tyms are returning from suspensions and decisions likely won't be made prior to te 4 PM decision deadline on Monday. Browner would have been valuable against the Bengals offense, but he will need to be eased into the Patriots secondary. It's likely the Thompkins move and elevation of Davis will relate to Tyms' activation on Monday.
