With the 179th pick in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots have made a selection, taking offensive guard Jon Halapio out of Florida.
Team Needs:
TE | DT | DE | LB | OG/C | S | RB | QB
Thoughts: Halapio represents the third offensive lineman selected by the Patriots on day three. He's got good size for a guard at 6-4 323lbs and was a team captain and three year starter for the Gators.
Patriots Draft Picks:
Round 1, Pick 29: Dominique Easley, DL, Florida
Round 2, Pick 62: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
Round 4, Pick 105: Brian Stork, C, Florida State
Round 4, Pick 130: James White, RB, Wisconsin
Round 4, Pick 140 (Compensatory): Cameron Fleming, OT, Stanford
Round 6, Pick 179: Jon Halapio, G, Florida
Round 6, Pick 198 (via Philadelphia): Today
Round 6, Pick 206: Today
Round 7, Pick 244: Today
Instant Grade: B
The Patriots have added some more intriguing camp competition and another developmental prospect with the selection of Halapio. Has some intriguing traits, smarts, and physical tools but is a bit inconsistent and has some durability concerns. Not a bad pick by any stretch, but the Patriots have now selected more lineman than can make the final roster (which could be a good thing).
