Why you should feel good about this weekend, and the Patriots this season.

Did this weekend go the way I would have liked it to? Not 100%, no. Ideally, I wanted Austin Sefarian-Jenkins or Troy Niklas to play with Gronkowski. I also wanted someone who could rush the passer and new starters at center and right guard. Lower level needs included linebacker depth, safety, running back and quarterback depth. Ws I satisfied with the influx or players brought in this weekend by the Patriots? Absolutely, and here is why you should too.

Dominique Easley

Loved him, hate him, I have heard both. I love the pick. He was the best interior pass rusher in the draft, yes better than Aaron Donald. Think about it, one played in the Big East/ACC and the Other in the NFL development league(SEC). Easley faced better competition and excelled. The knees are a legitimate concern, but if you forget that football is a physical, contact sport and that injuries happen- we haven't been watching the same games. Easley is the last piece of the puzzle to this defense, and if we can get better luck in the injury department(After last year, one can only help.) we are looking at a legitimate top 5 defense to pair with TFB and a pretty good offense.

Jimmy Garoppolo

So I heard that Tom Brady is Listen, you don't want to be scrambling for a new starter the year Brady is gone. If he goes down before the end of his contract, you need to ensure you have a capable performer. Ryan Mallett is gone at the end of the year, we all know this.(By the way was only drafted 12 spots lower than Garoppolo) At worst, he is a serviceable back-up for the next 4 years. At best? Or next starting quarterback who will have had 4 years of seasoning behind one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Would I have wanted a pass catching tight end like Troy Niklas or Austin Sefarian-Jenkins? a thousand times yes, but in case you didn't know, the went to the Cardinals and Buccaneers respectively. If he had traded up the would have lost there ammo to address another pressing need.

Bryan Stork, Cameron Fleming and Jon Halapio

Ryan Wendell and Dan Connolly were easily the weakest links on our offense last season. With stronger play at those positions, we know what Brady would be able to do with that extra time. I like the Bryan Stork pick, I think he will be the starter come week 1 in Miami. He was voted best center in college football last season. Thats right, not Weston Richburg, not Marcus Martin. Connolly will be cut, he wasn't to this point because the Patriots wanted to ensure they had capable suitors to replace him. They now have that in Marcus Cannon, Josh Kline, Cameron Fleming and Jon Halapio. Two guards and two Tackles who could also play guard. Nine is not an absurd amount of lineman it's actually reasonable and provides solid depth.

James White/Roy Finch and Justin Jones/Asa Watson/Tyler Beck

Have you seen a Roy Finch highlight yet? If not, go to You Tube. Now. White and Finch will be serviceable back ups to Vereen who is a player who definitely needs one and can also be insurance in case of his departure next off season. of the 3 UDFA Tight Ends(maybe a fourth, pending Joe Don Duncan) one is bound to make the roster with Gronk and Hoo-man. I am also betting we will see a signing of Dustin Keller who will solidify the depth chart at that position.

In the end, the Patriots made some great moves over the draft and set themselves up nicely for his season and possibly obtained the franchise's next signal caller. Let us also not forget Gronk, Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo, Tommy Kelly and Sebastian Vollmer are coming back next season. Five players who are great at their respective positions. I am looking forward to September and so should you. This is going to be a great season of Patriots Football.
