With the 62nd pick in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots have made a selection, taking quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out of Eastern Illinois.
Team Needs:
TE | DT | DE | LB | OG/C | S | RB | QB
Thoughts: With Ryan Mallett's contract expiring after 2014, the Patriots needed to select a developmental arm, but I don't think anyone expected the team to select a quarterback this early. Garropolo is a smart, mobile quarterback who will undoubtedly garner discussion about being the Patriots' quarterback of the future, despite Tom Brady having four years remaining on his contract.
Patriots Draft Picks:
Round 1, Pick 29: Dominique Easley, DL, Florida
Round 2, Pick 62: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
Round 3, Pick 93: Friday
Round 4, Pick 130: Saturday
Round 4, Pick 140 (Compensatory selection, can't be traded): Saturday
Round 6, Pick 198 (via Philadelphia): Saturday
Round 6, Pick 206: Saturday
Round 7, Pick 244
Instant Grade: B
The Patriots didn't have a lot of glaring needs, and with none of the top tight ends or running backs left on the board, it's not as if they passed up a top player at a position of need. Garoppolo is an intriguing prospect who certainly needs time to develop. He's a luxury pick for a championship contending team, but his selection is a luxury the Patriots can afford. At this spot, he was also very arguably the best player available.
