New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has shocked us all on what looked like was going to be a relatively quiet cutdown to 75. According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the New England Patriots have agreed to trade All-Pro guard Logan Mankins to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for TE/WR Tim Wright and a draft choice:
Breaking: the Patriots have agreed to parameters of a trade to send Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to the Bucs for a pick and TE Tim Wright— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) August 26, 2014
The deal is not yet finalized but the players have been informed and terms agreed upon. Still some things to work out. Mankins 6x Pro Bowler— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) August 26, 2014
Simply put, this is a shocking move.
Wright has a lot of upside as a move tight end and could turn out to be a very nice player. We'll wait for word on what that draft pick compensation will be. But in trading Mankins, the Patriots are losing one of their very best lineman from the last decade.
We'll have much, much more on this move shortly. I guess it turns out that the whole Dan Connolly vs. Ryan Wendell battle was irrelevant after all.
