Patriots Elevate LB Eric Martin to the Roster, Cut Former Colts S Dewey McDonald, Work Out Running Backs Pierre Thomas and Robert Turbin

The Patriots still have a roster space to fill before Sunday!

The New England Patriots are anticipating linebacker Jamie Collins to miss another week due to the flu and have elevated linebacker Eric Martin to the active roster in response according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

However, instead of using the open roster spot from placing running back Dion Lewis on the injured reserve, the Patriots have waived safety Dewey McDonald. McDonald was acquired from waivers after the Indianapolis Colts cut him and tried to stash him on the practice squad.

This means that the Patriots still have an open roster spot. ESPN's Field Yates reports that the Patriots worked out running backs Robert Turbin and Pierre Thomas, both backs that can run, catch, and block, while providing a slight offensive upgrade over special teamer Brandon Bolden.

The Patriots will try to fill their final roster spot at the last possible moment as the team hopes tackle Sebastian Vollmer can clear through the concussion protocol. If he clears, the Patriots will probably add an extra running back. If Vollmer doesn't pass the protocol, the team will likely elevate one of their practice squad tackles to add depth.
