The New England Patriots have reportedly made a small splash on the opening day of free agency, signing former Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Gibson to a one year contract:

This could be a potentially really nice signing for the Patriots.

Gibson had high expectations coming out of training camp in 2013 for the Dolphins, projecting as their top slot receiver and the #3 target at the position behind Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace. That season, he recorded 30 receptions in seven games for the Dolphins before landing on injured reserve.

He was healthy for most of 2014, but unfortunately lost a lot of playing time as the season wore on to stellar rookie Rishard Matthews.

In signing Gibson, the Patriots pick up a player at a very low cost that will compete with Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce for a roster spot. He is also potentially really solid insurance for Danny Amendola.

Not the flashiest day one move, but one that really helps build the depth of this Patriots team for 2015.
