Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots will not be picking up All Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis' option, setting him up to be a free agent on Tuesday at 4 PM.
New England likely has a plan in place and will have to free up some cap space prior to signing Revis to a longer term extension. Revis is regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in football and pairs with recently signed Devin McCourty as one of the top defensive back tandems in recent memory.
The Patriots will have to free up cap space by restructuring, amending, or extending the contracts of multiple players including Brandon Browner, Jerod Mayo, Danny Amendola, and Nate Solder in order to free up the money to sign Revis.
It's widely acknowledged that Revis will be a member of the Patriots or the Jets, with the Chiefs as a recent dark horse candidate. Revis wishes to remain with New England, so it's a matter of if the Patriots can free up the cap space to meet his demands.
