After trading the 96th pick to the Cleveland Browns, the New England Patriots have selected Geneo Grissom, defensive lineman / linebacker out of Oklahoma with the 97th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. This was the compensatory selection that the Patriots received in exchange for losing cornerback Aqib Talib to the Broncos last offseason.
Grissom is another player that many projected to go day three, but has intriguing versatility and athletic ability. At Oklahoma, Grissom lined up at defensive end, inside, and off-the-line and in space as a linebacker. He even has experience playing tight end.
He might not be the type of player that the Patriots project to be a starter immediately, but rather a key back-up that can contribute in multiple spots while developing into a larger role. He's strong, has a punch and a good first step. He's a project pick who was at the top of his game against the best opponents. Grissom's best college performance may have been in the 2014 Sugar Bowl against Alabama, where he sacked AJ McCarron twice and recovered a game clinching fumble for a touchdown.
In the trade with the Browns, the Patriots picked up picks 111 (4th round), 147 (5th round), and 202 (6th round). The Patriots also traded away their seventh round pick.
What are your initial thoughts on the pick?
