According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the New England Patriots have released edge defender Michael Buchanan and wide receiver Kevin Dorsey.
Buchanan was the team's 7th round pick in 2013 and flashed impressive size and speed. Unfortunately, he struggled to develop his ability to set the edge against the run and often found himself running out of position, which ultimately led to his benching as a rookie. His development was brought to a stop in 2014 after he wound up on the injured reserve. Buchanan was a versatile defender in college, with similar utility to rookie Geneo Grissom, so it's possible Buchanan will find himself a quality home in a 3-4 defense as an outside linebacker.
The Patriots signed Dorsey this past March, but apparently didn't believe the marriage would work. New England brought in two undrafted free agents in Devin Gardner and Chris Harper, as well as a veteran in Brandon Gibson, so the team felt they could better allocate that roster spot with another position.
