Today, the New England Patriots hit the practice field for the scond time during this year's training camp. Practice was once again held on the fields behind Gillette Stadium, once again it was a beautiful July day (even though it was not as hot as yesterday) and once again fans showed up in full force.
Working through the Twitterverse, here are some notes about today's session:
Attendance
-- Brandon LaFell, LeGarrette Blount, Matt Flynn, Dominique Easley, Matthew Slater, Dane Fletcher, Chris White, Ryan Wendell, Vince Taylor, A.J. Derby, Caylin Hauptmann, Chris Jones and Alan Branch did not practice.
-- Blount did obviously not yet pass his conditioning test: he was present only in street clothes.
-- Linebacker James Morris, who appeared to have sustained an injury yesterday, was back on the field.
Injuries
-- Rookie linebacker D.J. Lynch limped off the field.
-- Derek Cox left practice early and did not return.
Offensive Notes
-- Via Mark Daniels, the quarterbacks looked as follows:
11-on-11s:
Tom Brady: 18 of 26
Jimmy Garoppolo: 15 of 22
7-on-7s:
Brady: 7 of 10
Garoppolo: 5 of 10
-- Brady practiced against the starting defense, Garoppolo against the backups.
-- At one point, Garoppolo and a group of receivers (Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler, Michael Hoomanawanui, Josh Boyce, Aaron Dobson) worked separately on red zone plays.
-- Just like yesterday, rookie guards Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason were given a lot of reps with a line including Nate Solder, Bryan Stork and Marcus Cannon.
-- With Cannon seeing lots of reps at right tackle, Sebastian Vollmer was often relegated to a spectator role.
-- Defensive end-turned-tight end Jake Bequette made, according to Mike Reiss, the "play of the day" when he caught a touchdown from Tom Brady in the back corner of the endzone.
-- James White again saw lot of reps as the team's receiving back; both he and Tavaris Cadet had a nice day catching passes.
Defensive Notes
-- Rookie edge defender Trey Flowers and second-year linebacker James Morris saw some time with the perceived front seven starting group.
-- The team looks for, and finds, ways to have Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard on the field together.
-- The defense was running multiple looks and changing alignments during 11-on-11s.
-- Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Robert McClain, Bradley Fletcher and Tavon Wilson all had pass break-ups during team drills.
-- Overall the secondary had a good practice session today.
-- With Branch, Easley and Jones sidelined, Antonio Johnson saw some reps with defensive tackles Sealver Siliga and Malcom Brown.
Special Teams Notes
-- Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Harper and Jonathan Krause were the punt returners. Krause muffed one punt.
-- Ryan Allen had some good punts today.
Miscellaneous
-- Players did not wear pads but, as opposed to yesterday, wore numbers on their shirts.
-- As has been the case yesterday, "Brady! Brady!" was chanted numerous times during practice.
-- Another plane was seen over the facility today. This time its message read "New England Aerial Ads Supports Tom Brady Go Pats"
