After their offday yesterday, the New England Patriots returned to the practice fields for the tenth session of this year's training camp. As usual, practice was held on the fields behind Gillette Stadium and was open to the media and the public.
Working through the Twittersphere, here are some notes about today's session:
Attendance
-- The following players did not practice today (17): Scott Chandler, Travaris Cadet, Bryan Stork, LeGarrette Blount, Aaron Dobson, Dion Lewis, Tyler Gaffney, Marcus Cannon, Joe Vellano, Caylin Hauptman, Brandon LaFell, Ryan Wendell, Dane Fletcher, Eric Martin, Darius Fleming, Chris White and Chris Jones.
-- The following players returned to practice today (5): wide receivers Julian Edelman, Matthew Slater (off the PUP list) and Brian Tyms as well as defensive tackles Alan Branch (off the NFI list) and Malcom Brown.
-- A new running back wearing number 25 was seen on the field; it is undrafted rookie Tony Creecy.
Injuries
-- Nate Solder left the session and walked to the locker room; it didn't look serious.
Offensive Notes
-- According to Mark Daniels the quarterbacks performed as follows:
11-on-11s:
Brady: 9/15, INT
Garoppolo: 11/14
Lindley: 4/10, INT
7-on-7s:
Brady: 7/9, INT
Garoppolo: 5/6
Lindley: 5/9
-- Brady and Boyce connected on a deep touchdown pass down the middle of the field with Darryl Roberts in coverage.
-- Edelman started the session with his teammates but later left and was seen running sprints with those players, who did not practice.
-- After Solder left, the top offensive line from left to right was Barker-Mason-Andrews-Jackson-Fleming.
-- With a depleted line, Brady would have been sacked on five of his first ten offensive snaps.
-- A reverse pass to Brady fell incomplete.
-- Wide receiver Zach D'Orazio took multiple reps as a wild-cat quarterback.
Defensive Notes
-- Malcolm Butler big play number one: breaking up a deep ball from Brady intended for Jonathan Krause.
-- Malcolm Butler big play number two: an impressive one-handed interception of a Brady pass intended for Josh Boyce. At this point it is pretty clear that he is the Patriots' number one cornerback.
-- Dont'a Hightower also had an interception off Brady, after a pass bounced off Tyms' chest.
-- Jerod Mayo had a hard hit on Rob Gronkowski after the tight end caught a pass in the middle of the field and drew some boos from the audience because of it.
-- Duron Harmon intercepted Ryan Lindley during 11-on-11s.
-- Butler, Tarell Brown and Jimmy Jean had pass breakups today.
-- Branch did positional drills but later joined Edelman and others on the lower practice fields doing rehab work.
Special Teams Notes
-- A Danny Amendola kickoff return fumble was recovered by Robert McClain and returned for a touchdown.
Miscellaneous
-- Newly signed quarterback Ryan Lindley will wear jersey number 7.
-- Slater and Tyms wore red non-contact jerseys.
-- The team was in full pads.
-- Brian Tyms stands out, at least when it comes to his hair.
