The Patriots traded for Keshawn Martin, sending a late conditional pick to the Houston Texans in return. In order to make room for him, the Patriots have waived defensive lineman Khyri Thornton. The Patriots initially claimed Thornton on waivers during the cut down to 53. Thornton was inactive for the game against the Steelers and was likely going to be red-shirted this year at the minimum. The Patriots roster now stands at the 53 player limit. If Thornton can clear waivers, the Patriots can sign him to the practice squad.
The Patriots traded a 5th round pick for Keshawn Martin and a 6th round pick. It's likely the Patriots will get that 5th round pick back as a compensatory selection. With Thornton's release, the Patriots are now at 10 defensive linemen (4 DT, 6 DE).
