The (2-1-0) New England Patriots will host the (1-2-0) New York Giants
The last two times the Patriots have faced the Giants in the preseason and in the regular season were waypoints in a greater cosmic clash between Bill Belichick and the fates. The Patriots and the Giants met in regular season and in the Super Bowl of the 2007 and 2011 seasons, with the Giants taking home both Super Bowls. 2015 is destiny for New England's revenge...right?
Look for the Patriots to rest their starters for the full game, and look for the Giants starters to either see a drive, or nothing at all. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played the entire preseason game last season and, pending the outcome of the DeflateGate verdict, will likely repeat the act this year. Look for players like Aaron Dobson and Reggie Wayne to see time to integrate themselves back into the offense, along with tight end Scott Chandler. Look for cornerbacks Tarell Brown and Bradley Fletcher to play at least the first half as they try to win one of the starting positions across from Malcolm Butler.
There are numerous connections between the Patriots, Giants, and the Northeast region due to their locales. Giants CEO John Mara attended Boston College outside of the city, while Patriots owner Bob Kraft attended Columbia University in New York. Giants receiver Victor Cruz attended UMass, while numerous Giants players attended Boston College, including linebacker Mark Herzlich and running back Andre Williams. Patriots defensive tackle Dominique Easley attended high school in New York City, while there is no shortage of connections between New England and Rutgers.
The Giants assistant special teams coach is former Patriots great Larry Izzo, while Patriots head coach Bill Belichick served as one of the greatest defensive coordinators in NFL history with the Giants. New England offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo served as the Giants offensive line coach in the 2007 Super Bowl. There are a handful of former Patriots on the Giants roster, including running back Shane Vereen, tight end Daniel Fells, linebacker Jonathan Casillas, and safety Brandon Meriweather.
