The New England Patriots have added former New York Jets LB Trevor Reilly, per NESN’s Doug Kyed. Kyed reported that the Patriots worked out Reilly earlier this week.
Reilly is a 6’5, 250-pound linebacker who was selected in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Jets. Reilly has appeared in 29 games for the Jets over the past two years, collecting 19 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. He was released during final cuts this season with an injury settlement.
Reilly is a tweener on defense and is a good fit as a strongside linebacker in the Patriots 5-2 fronts. The Patriots are thin at linebacker after placing LB Jonathan Freeny on the injured reserve. Reilly will be wearing #53.
Reilly is 28 years old and spent two years prior to college serving on a mission in Sweden for the Mormon Church.
We will provide an update on the Patriots corresponding roster move.
Edit: The Patriots have released practice squad WR Shaq Evans to make space for Reilly. Reilly will be on the practice squad.
